gregGinger Turbo Cider

1 year ago | Greg (Admin)

Inspired by Dan post, I decided to knock together a quick batch of turbo cider on Wednesday night.

I boiled up 150g of brewing sugar, added a thumb sized piece of grated ginger and steeped for 1/2 hr. I then added 4 litres of Lidl Apple juice to a glass demi, strained the sugared juice and ginger into it and pitched a Lalvin Champagne yeast.

The yeast kicked in really quickly and a decent head formed within 2 hours.

Topped up with apple juice last night as the head had died down and checked this morning was fizzing as mad, so much that it had blown all the water out of the airlock.

So all looking good, looking forward to tasting this in a few weeks and if its good then I will knock up plenty more.

Planning:Maybe a lager.
Fermenting:
Conditioning:Pale with Styrians
Drinking:Cascade Pale Ale, Summer Lightning

Looking fantastic Greg, beautiful colour too! I have to do this again and use ginger! I'm blaming you too ... as the missus wants to know why I need to make more.

I racked mine yesterday and was quite surprised that it didn't taste like lighter fuel :o)

Beer will get you through the times of no money better than money will get you through the times of no beer

Its so easy. Took about 10 mins to knock together. If it tastes good then I'll be back for plenty more. May have to knock up some Elderflower next week while they are still about.

    Planning:Maybe a lager.

This has been a massive success. Its been in the bottle for about 3 weeks now and I served some to a friend of mine (a lager drinker who normally turns his nose up at home brew) but he loves his cider so thought I would test some out on him.

He loved it and couldn't believe I made it from Lidl's Apple juice.

It tastes really like apple juice (but 6% apple juice) just like good cider should. I'm not sure what the ginger has done but I think its given it a subtle under taste.

I'm off to lidl's later to get some more juice. 2 or 3 demijohns this time.

If you like cider then you need to make some of this up, its so easy! The bottling is the hardest part.

    Planning:Maybe a lager.

    Hi Greg,

Thinking very seriously of trying this cider recipe myself.
At the risk of advertising on this forum, do you have the exact name or a pic of the Lidl apple juice? I just know that Lidl stock can vary from region to region, so just want to see if any of my local stores has the same stuff you lads use.

    Cheers,

    -Barry

Planning: Marstons Pedigree or London Pride clone
Conditioning (Bottles): Sam Adams Boston Lager Clone
Drinking (Bottles): Sierra Nevada Pale Ale Clone
Drinking (King Keg): McMullen's Country Best Bitter

Hi Barry, sorry haven't had a chance for a pic yet but is called vitafit 100% Apple Juice. Comes in a green carton and its 1.5 litres. Our store has a special offer 2 x 1.5litres for £1 so bargain, 4.5 litres of cider for about £2 (including yeast if you split over a couple of batches.) - 20p per bottle.

    Planning:Maybe a lager.

That's the one I used. Turned out great, in fact kicked off another 2 demi's this evening but omitted the ginger this time as didn't have any. I may add some after its fermented for a few days and leave in there this time.

Does the coppella make it any better?

    Planning:Maybe a lager.

Don't know if it makes it any better! I know it makes it cost more though!!

I'm sure going to have to make a batch! or three! was thinking of 1gal of normal TC, 1gal apple with elderflower, and maybe 1gal apple and passion fruit! to experiment a bit!

Um, passion fruit sounds interesting. In fact I have a couple of really ripe one's in the fridge so may add them to one of the demi's after a couple for days.

That's the great thing about TC as you are only doing small batches and it's ready really quickly so not really a big issue if you have a disaster whilst experimenting. So easy too.

    Planning:Maybe a lager.

Count me in for a crack at this too. Scored 2 5L glass demijohns from a neighbour who used to make wine back in the 70's.

I happen to have a couple of packs of coopers yeasts, left over when i have substituted with S04 instead. Can I use these instead of champagne yeaast

Planning - To make more beer

Silly question from a newby, where do I buy Brewing sugar? is that the same as the spraymalt stuff I buy in Wilkinsons or can I just use ordinary granulated?
I got my lalvin yeast delivered today so I'm itching to get going. Also can this cider go into a pressure barrell or is it best bottled? Thanks

PS: Wished I'd read your posts before I paid out for Tesco's Not from concentrate juice which set me back £8 for 5ltr - I love Lidls.

i've found Cider or Champagne yeast are the best then wine yeast! doubt beer yeast will work well!!

Heres brewing sugar Brewing sugar (clicky)Spraymalt is spray-dried malt (unfermented beer basically in powder form) turned into a fine soluble powder, BKE is 50% brewers sugar and 50% spraymalt, don't use spraymalt in TC!! Brewing sugar will give a better finish and disolve easier but normal sugar will work.
