hi,
looked for an alcoholic ginger beer recipe before i found this forum and wiki said that you need an ginger beer plant (gpl) to make one. and that you get one after fermenting the ginger beer.
and that was the point which confused me.
is this like making vinegar? when you get this special fungi on top?
how do i store the ginger beer plan and what do i do whit the first set of ginger beer (which was use to produce the glp) trow away?
btw what are the sultanas for in some recipe (as i hate them )

    Hi there.
    I found this

Ginger Beer Plant - no it isn't a plant, but a kit that contains everything you need to make old-fashioned fermented ginger beer including the starter (the plant).

In the past, frothy, fizzy, gingery alcoholic beer which was made at home was very popular. All that was needed was some sugar, ginger, water and a ginger beer 'plant'. This wasn't a typical green, leafy kind of plant. It was a sloppy, white mass that was kept in a jam jar. It would be regularly 'fed' with sugar and every so often the liquid would be tapped off, diluted and bottled. The liquid would ferment in the bottle, producing the fizz. After about a week or so it was ready to drink. As the plant grew it was halved and passed on to family and friends.

I am the special funghi who likes to go on top. I don't mind being stored in the cupboard under the stairs, but the union didn't like the fact I was being paid peanuts. ...So now I deal strictly in sultanas.
