Just thought I'd resurrect this thread…. There’s a fair few more regulars in here now, anyone else planning on coming along?
I think Grey, BM and I are all going on the Friday (hopefully meeting for brekkie first – lots of stodge facilitating an enormous amount of ‘tasting’).
Anyone else able to come?

I'm going to brave the Saturday with the crowds. Would have preferred Friday, but my sister in law has selfishly decided that she is getting married on that date. How rude.
Posted 1 year ago by Moderator
Stu I feel for ya. My wife has only gone and bought me a (7 year) belated honeymoon, only on the same time as the GBBF. How selfish of her to spend a load of money on a great well needed holiday/honeymoon for me.
Selfish, selfish, selfish. I tell you the row we had. I told her to think next time. Bah.

:o) Next time!
So do you know where you're going yet nath? I bet you its somewhere with no beer. If you're really lucky, it'll be 2 weeks in The Royal Oaks in Oxford.
:o)
Stu .. that is exceptionally inconsiderate. Still, if it's an open bar, you should be ok. If all goes to plan, you'll probably be stepping over me on saturday morning to gain access to Earl's Court!

Funnily enough its in Mayfair, which by my reckoning is only 4 stops on the tube... Have to see what time the speeches finish
Posted 1 year ago by Member
That's true.... you could sneak out.
Married in Mayfair... hope you're not paying for it!

I'm not sure I can make it. My daughters birthday party the next day and I'm not sure its the kind of preparations that Tanya had in mind.

Arrrgghh.....
There are just so many inconsiderate people in this world. Nath's wife, Stu's sister-in-law, Greg's daughter... don't they know the importance of beer?
:o)
No prob Greg, families (and especially daughters) come first.
I'll put mine to bed tonight, read to them, tuck them in and then say goodnight until I see them at 6pm on Friday. I leave before they wake up (6.15am), have Year 9 Parents Evening tomorrow night (home at 9pm), New Intake Evening (for new parents) on Thursday evening (home anywhere around 10ish) and then if there's a fair wind blowing, will see them for an hour on Friday.
Daughters always come first when I'm not working.

Alas... i'm unable to go too.
My mum has dropped the bombshell that she is organising a surprise 30th birthday party for my sister that weekend and on pain of death i have to go along. As much as i protested that i'd organised to go to London to drink beer. It was met with the look that only a mother could give when you know she is not amused.
Still always next year...

Who got their dates wrong? Hands up if you're a prize idiot...? Yep that accolade goes to me. As per norm and i am sure most people don't listen to their parents especially at our age. But i mis heard my mum and she said it's the following weekend...
So GBBF HERE I COME!!! Ticket booked today... first class ticket via train booked... cheap ticket back via coach booked... beer money being saved up.
Already looking forward to it.

Good man! Well done BM ... I'll see you there! What time do you arrive?
(with grateful thanks to the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers and slightly adapted)
Posted 1 year ago by Member
Hi Tony,
I will be getting the 9:30 train from Norwich and arrive in London around 11:25. Should hopefully, get to Earls Court around 12:00 although probably earlier because i am sure it doesn't take 30 minutes from Liverpool Street to Earls Court.
Will leave well oiled around 5:45 as i am on a 6:30 coach from London Victoria.
Looking forward to it already.

I'm green. I want no further mention of said event. In fact I'm going to delete this thread and forget I ever started it.
Only joking but can you make out it was a load of rubbish to make those who missed it feel better. Stories of gut rot ale, sweaty blokes with bad BO and beards etc etc would be welcomed.

Well .. now had a day to recover. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven.
Some great beers won prizes too ... TT's Landlord (Best), Jaipur (Strong) & Admiral's Reserve (Bottle).
Had my fair share of Jaipur and a couple of dozen others - thankfully stuck to drinking thirds and mostly those at around 4%. One surprise, Barum Ale (made in Barnstaple) was a cracker.
Didn't hear from Neil ... hope he's ok! Hope you had a good day Gazz!

I survived. Interesting experience, not as messy as I thought it would be. Stuck to halfs and got through about a dozen beers. Mexican bandit was my fave. I got some pics to post too.

Was all I managed to capture in Pics. Some slipped through the net, and by the time we got to the cider stand on the way out, I'd given up...

Tony,
I did go... but my phone has broken so i couldn't phone anyone. I did email you but received incorrect email address error plus wasn't sure whether you'd get a message on here in time? I apologise profusely! Would have been good to have met up, maybe next year?
Had a blinding time tried 11 different beers:-
I tried to stay away from the main stream breweries but succumbed to Thornbridge Jaipur IPA and Shepherd Neame Canterbury Jack the latter being very nice indeed first time i've tried it too.
The other beers i tried were:-
Adur - Hop Token 4.7% had a lovely grapefruit/orange taste to it.
Cannon Royall - Fruiterer's Mild 3.7% very very nice indeed!
Glastonbury - Lady of the Lake 4.2% described as drop dead gorgeous and it was too you could taste the vanilla in it but it was just a hint of.
Great Heck - Hecks Angel 3.9% made with American Cascade hops and very nice indeed
Langham - Hip Hop 4% Light, crisp and very hoppy indeed
Lees - Strawbeery 3.8% RANCID... RANCID... RANCID...! Too sweet and the only beer i poured away.
Newby Wyke - White Squall 4.8% Very hoppy very nice.
Old Mill - Blonde Bombshell 4.0% Made with Bohemian Hops and very nice too.
Shardlow - Goldenhop 4.1% very pale beer dry hopped with Goldings and very nice too.
Disappointed with the results from the beer of the festival... Tim Taylor getting silver? and Gr**ne K**g XX mild getting a silver too. Nothing against Tim Taylor just too mainstream now. As for the other what were the judges thinking?

#Note to self - Dont go on a Saturday!
Nice pics there Stu.
Had a great day Saturday but I shall be going to the next one on a weekday, couldnt believe the amount of stag parties etc. Seemed like there were a hell of alot of lads there just to get wrecked rather than enjoying the beer. Hence the reason why the German bar was rammed all day due to it being one of the only bars serving Lager.....took me ages to get a Rauchbier & Dunkel!
Loved every minute of it, even if it was with the mrs!
Posted 1 year ago by Member
No worries Neil, not a problem!
I'd love to post a list of those tried.. but errrr... ummm ... I'll look through the book and see which of those I remember!
Gazz, I didn't see a single wrecked person while I was there.... although that may have more to do with me than them
What a great event!

Saturday was carnage Tony. Particularly towards the end... I didnt mind the mexican cheer waves (like a mexican wave, but with people cheering instead of standing up) or the fact that every broken glass got a big shout (I mean, thats industry standard right?) but I did take exception to the guy that was puking in the middle of the floor into one of the big wheelie bins. Not a pretty sight, and I come from Croydon so you think I'd be well versed in this type of behaviour.
Posted 1 year ago by Member
I couldnt make out if them cheers were coming from people or the speakers, my guess was the speakers.
Couldnt get enough of that pork scratchings stall!!!
Posted 1 year ago by Member
Would you believe I'd never had pork scratchings before then. I tried on and realised why... I'm sure they are the creme de la creme of pork scratchings but they aren't for me
Posted 1 year ago by Member
Thanks Tony,
I must admit i only remembered the ales because i am a spotter and tick and rate every beer i drink
But then how do i know what beer i've drunk?
I love the cheering everytime a beer glass got broken. As mentioned it's industry standard and happens at most festivals i attend.
I didn't see any trouble although annoys me when i heard two scrotes moan that the beer which was 10% only came in half pints and they wanted to get smashed so were going to the German bar.. Why do these idiots come to the festival? Surely it's all about the beer and finding different ones to taste?
My other half wasn't pleased because i came back with a couple more books one on how to brew your own IPA and Wells & Youngs pub interiors. Plus 1 more pint glass to my collection as well.
Stu shame Saturday was ruined... i guess they just want people to come through the door. But surely security could move them on?
Posted 1 year ago by Member
Yeah I suppose. Didn't really ruin it for me, but like you say I'd expected more people there to enjoy all the beers rather than just get trolleyed. Hey ho. Deffo going to try Friday next year.
Posted 1 year ago by Member
Can you believe that up to (somewhere) around the 7 to 7pm mark on the Friday, I only heard one cheer for a broken glass .. and have to admit it was a laugh. I left without getting any pork scratchings - forgot all about them, was too busy drinking and went clean out of my mind once I got 'stuck' over the other side
I too was appalled at the amount of people at the 'foreign' beer stand ... can't believe why people came in only to drink shite that was available across the road. Was a bit upset that the sierra nevada was only in bottles too ... massive bar with 2 or 3 people serving. Go figure as they would say across the water.
Looking forward to next year already - already planning to attend 2 days as there's no way I can get enough in on one day and still remain standing - or alive! Be nice if we could all make it!
(Nothing to be embarrassed about Neil
)

I must admit Tony would LOVE to do 2 days next year. However, 3 things would stop me.
1 - Liver couldn't cope
2 - Wife!
3 - Funds
I know what you mean though there are far too many to try there. I would consider volunteering to work there because if it's anything like the Norwich Beer festival where i work. You get to try more as a volunteer than you would as a punter plus the monumental piss up at the end as well
It does annoy me that they have to have l*ger in there too. Why come to a beer festival if you're not going to try the ales that are there. Some of them prices for the beers were horrendous! £9 for one i saw on the foreign beer stand. Also some of the staff were rude as well. Especially where the Scottish beer was served, several times i got there and was ignored only to have someone walk up and instantly get served. So much so i walked away in disgust!
I really enjoyed it though and as you said Tony looking forward to next year already. But i have the Norwich one with 250+ beers in October to look forward too.
