hammy1801Funking up a Wherry!!

1 year ago | hammy1801 (Member)

Hi all
Got a wee conundrum. Recently bought a Wherry, Geordie Scottish Export, Brupacks Flavapack (Ale) and Muntons beer enhancer.
Original idea was to do the Wherry as per the pack instructions and then do the Export with the beer enhancer and the Brupacks Flavapack. However I was wondering how results would pan out if I used the Flavapack in the Wherry? Has anyone done this, and what were the results?
Not starting brewing till 5 Feb due to house move so still got time to mull this over. On one hand I love experimenting on the other I really like the taste of Wherry!!!
P.S. Export is just gonna be a session ale (Mon to Fri ale).

Planning - Single Hop Pale Ale.
Fermenting - Coopers Canadian Blonde
Conditioning - Coopers Pilsner, Coopers English Bitter
Drinking - None

Saracen's got the answer to that one:

    7th Post

I've done similar but dry hopped with Styrians in a secondary fermenter.

I was a bit disappointed at first but I tried it again last week and it's very nice now. I must have left it for about 2 months for it to have got to this quality.

Planning: Something with Styrians, Discovery Clone
    Fermenting:
    Condtioning:
    Drinking: Twibute Clone, PJ Clone

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Simon. The amount of dry hopping you do can be quite large. 20 or 30 gms is not out of the way, but I recommend 5 to start with to get used to what effect it has. Styrians would give more aroma than plain Goldings, or you can use any aroma hop. 10 gm of Nelson Sauvin would be an interesting one.

Hi Hammy. It's a long time since I brewed a Wherry, and to be honest, I've never seen a Flavapack in a Wherry kit. If it's a 'teabag' with hops in, smell it. If it's fresh and hoppy it's OK, but they go off quickly. If it smells musty, chuck it.

If you're not living on the edge..... you're taking up too much space!!

Planning: - To get some more brews on now the weather's a bit cooler
    Fermenting: - Ginger Beer experiment
Conditioning: - A normal bitter with Styrians
    Drinking: - All of it!!

    Hi all
Cheers for the responses (will choose my titles more carefully in future ). Saracen, it was after reading your post on the barrelling wherry question that prompted me to ask my question.
Probably gonna try the pack in the Wherry then hopefully, if it is a success, will try Dry Hopping in my next Wherry (want to get a safe brew done in new house before experimenting).

Planning - Single Hop Pale Ale.
    Fermenting - Coopers Canadian Blonde
Conditioning - Coopers Pilsner, Coopers English Bitter

At the end of the day never had the nerve to potentially spoil such a good beer like the wherry with the flavapack and ive chucked it in the Export.
Both beers conditioning now so fingers crossed for the Export.

I funked up a Wherry with some chillis this week. My father-in-law makes a good porter with homegrown jalepenos so I thought I'd give it a try. I tried a little drop today, I think it's going to be a winner!

You seem to have been very successful with that, Peter. 1.006 is very low and should produce 4.6% ABV. Did you use the yeast supplied with the kit? If the reading stays the same over 24 hours then it's ready for priming and barrelling/bottling.

If you're not living on the edge..... you're taking up too much space!!

    Fermenting: - Ginger Beer experiment
