Do i have the lid on the fermenting bin completly shut? and the little plastic tube sticking out the lid. am i right in thinking that should have a little bit of water in and if so how much. Hi Mark, you don't need to ferment beer under airlock as the primary fermentation is pretty vigorious but it won't hurt as the kit comes with one. Snap the lid shut, insert the airlock and put enough water in it so that the lid can sit back in and covers the inlet so no air can get into the fermenter. Just rest the top of the airlock loosley in.
Beer temp is fine, anywhere between 18 - 22c is where you want to be and move somewhere away from direct sunlight. Then just leave alone for a week or so. You should see a thick foamy head form, probably in the next 24 hrs which is the sign that the yeast is working.
Keep the questions coming, I remember my first brew and it was quite daunting.

Hi Guys,
I am new to brewing myself and I have just started my very first brew from a Young’s home making kit. However, I do not have a barrel for the beer once the fermenting process has finished so I am looking for a little advise on which type I should buy to start of with which I will of course upgrader later.
Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated at this early stage of by beer making career.
Cheers,
Garry

Look no further, Fullers! Greg has just reduced the price of his plastic 5 gallon barrels. They are fine so long as you clean and sterilise them thoroughly after use.... very soon after use if you can. A bit of steriliser or bleach in the barrel and a good blast out with the pressure washer, then store it with about 100ml of Sodium Metabisulphite solution in it. Get one with a pressure cap. S30 is the best, as the gas bottle is bigger and lasts longer, but it's expensive to start with. I use a pin valve set up and small Nitrogen or CO2 bulbs. Nitrogen gives a lovely Creamflow style head. Remember, everything must be scrupulously clean and sterile. If you think it's clean, clean it again.
Planning: - To get some more brews on now the weather's a bit cooler
Fermenting: - Ginger Beer experiment
Conditioning: - A normal bitter with Styrians
Drinking: - All of it!!
