Am just about to kick off me first brew in a long long time, but cant remember whether to seal my brewing bucket lid right down or leave it open a little. Will the gas produced burst the bucket if its left on tight? Dont want to be washed down the stairs by a torrent of brew in the early hours!

    Good luck with the brew.
    What are you making?

Have you got an air lock?

If not just snap the lid down all the way round, and then lift up one corner.
Not that circles have corners, but you know what I mean.

I haven't left one totally sealed, but I imagine it would send a gunky yeast/trub mix everywhere when it finally blows.

no air lock, just a snap close lid. reckoned it would be a bit risky leaving it completely sealed, but dont want anything uninvited growing in there. What's the risk of infection?

    Very unlikely.
The carbon dioxide produced during fermentation sits on top of the beer and stops things from growing.

First few brews I did I just left the lid part sealed. worked fine for me with no problems. But now use an airlock to be sure.

    Drinking; Nelson's Naval, Cuckoo's Knob
    Conditioning;
    In FV; Wigle Waggle
    plannIng; Summer with elderflower

If it's one of those Youngs fermenting buckets then there's probably no harm in snapping the lid shut. I used one for ages with the lid snapped shut. I had an airlock on it too but it never once bubbled meaning the lid's not airtight when closed.

Planning: More SNPA, more experimental cider
    Fermenting: Marston's Pedigree
    Conditioning (Bottles): Warsteiner Lager Clone
Drinking (King Keg): Fullers London Pride

I have an airlock on a Youngs FV and it works great. It didn't to start with, as I found out that the hole I had made in the lid was far from perfect. Since I sealed the airlock to the lid it's been great. 2 layers of gaffer tape on the lid and push the airlock through it did the trick.

If you're not living on the edge..... you're taking up too much space!!

Planning: - To get some more brews on now the weather's a bit cooler
    Fermenting: - Ginger Beer experiment
Conditioning: - A normal bitter with Styrians
    Drinking: - All of it!!

I always fit a fermentation lock .. I like to hear the music of the bubbles.

Cheers for all that folks. it is a Youngs Brew Kit, and i was dead keen to kick it off on the 1st of the month! I have snapped the lid shut, and am lifting a corner once a day, but its probably not necessary from wot you say. Certainly, the pressure dosent seem excessive and i agree that the lid is not gas tight in any case. It does give off a satisfyingly yeasty 'guff' when lift it tho!
