bantzExtract Brewing, Syrup or spraymalt?

1 year ago | bantz (Member)

Hello, I am really new to this game and I am wanting to start straight off with extract brewing just to get my head round the basics, I have lots of recipes but all suggest using syrup, I do fancy using the summer ale recipe that is on this website and that uses spraymalt, would I be okay to just exchange the quantity of syrup for spraymalt in any other recipe i may use, or is it not that easy?

Hi Bantz and welcome to the forum.

Yes you can substitute LME (liquid malt extract) for DME (dried malt extract) and vice versa. As LME has around 20% water then you need to account for this when converting the recipes, ie use 20% less DME or 20% more LME when converting the recipe.

Personally I prefer DME as is usually fresher and I find it easier to work with but its personal preference. Both will make good beer.

Let us know if you need any more help converting/creating a recipe.

    Regards

    Greg

Greg is spot on. On your other point the summer ale recipe on here is excellent and a great basis to start experimenting. In my last batch I added 150g raisins (blitzed in the magimix with some hot wort) and 250g of Candi sugar!

Excellent, thanks for the response! Can I just ask, some of the recipes I have ask for Diastatic malt extract, can you get this in spraymalt form or is it a specialist form that requires syrup?
