Brew UK Forum | Cider Making
Equipement
I a group of us near Andover made a fair bit of cider last year.
I have access to some equipment and hope to mechanise some of the process this year.
If anyone has a decent size press or wants to use the equipment please let me know.

Hi Lol
No, never have done. I considered doing one of those turbo ciders but would rather do it with apples. I grew up in Devon so have had plenty of experience of morning afters from scrumpy and 'rough ciders' so it would be something I only approached cautiously :o)
Sounds like a great plan, I'm sure there would be some people wanting to use a press. How many people in your group?

This would be second year, we had about 6/8 people. A few people from outside the village.
We would doing it again for a few weekends end of sept early Oct.
Get some apple and come along. I am ammazed how good the cider is. I have just done the blackrock kit which should be ready later summer.

Crikey! Looking at your picture. Just wondering you're not Jigsaw in disguise are you?
I fully expected a lager drinker to be chained up there with a sign saying "I will not drink lager again" on him. With a can of XXXX shoved up his jacksie.
But all in all it looks a good piece of equipment.

Cider Making - I have filled all my fermenters and to keep my wife has happy I have agreed to bring no more containers in the house.
However I have been given loads more apples.
Here is my offer, if you want to make some cider I am quite happy to supply the equipment and help.
I think it would take a couple of hours to make 50-75 lts and you would need storage vessels.
I live near Andover

That's a great offer Laurence. I'm not a huge cider drinker myself but if I was then I would be heading your way.
There must be some cider drinkers within commutable distance who will take you up on that offer?

I like to get my apples crushed a lot more than yours appear to be; my largest lumps are about a cc. Why don't you have a secondary drive from your shaft to another scratter with closer tolerances to put them through again and mash them down further? My press (homemade) is a stainless steel cylinder about 20" x 10" with 10mm holes in it. I use a 5 ton bottle jack to press and fill it to 2" from the top with pulp which yields 8 to 10 litres of juice.

Good observation, I had added some screws and made it a smaller shred.
I did'nt realise how difficult building something like this is to deal with large, small, soft & hard apples.
Be nice to see a pic of you equipment

Lol the Troll - did as you suggested here they are My Equipment?
I'm looking at using a fixed two way hydraulic or air operated ram and a an electric scratter next year as it's taking too long this year. so far I have got 83 gallons brewing and about another 15 bags of apples to crush which should make about another 25 gallons.

PS It's not me in the photo.

I can't see a link to a photo, I have about 65 gallons fermenting and I did 10 galls of apple juice for apple suppliers!
Do you kill off natural yeast with Campden tabs? Did you check PH? where about do you live? Have you ever seen a grown man cry (sorry just sounded funny )

Ta, difficult to see link as its same colour.
I like the press what do you get volume wise per press apprx?
Posted 1 year ago by Member
I get 7.5 to 10 litres per pressing. I sterilize the whole apples before scratting and put in a campden tablet per 5 litres. I don't check the ph but check the SG before fermenting and add sugar to correct to 1060 - 1065 if necessary. I live on the Nottinghamshire Derbyshire border about three miles from M1 J27. Yes, I've seen a grown man cry, usually myself or my mate when we spill some apple juice when pressing or when bottles have blown up once our cider is ready!
I see what you mean re the hyperlink, you'd think the web builder would make it appear in a different colour.
