gregEpsom Salts

2 years ago | Greg (Admin)

I thought I would try water treatment for the first time this weekend but I can't find epsom salts anywhere.

Does anyone know where you can get them from? I've tried boots and holland & Barrett but neither sold just epsom salts, they always had something extra added to them.

I can (and will) get some from Brupaks but that will take a while

    Try garden centres.

They are also known as Magnesium Sulphate, and will probably be in the fertiliser and trace element section.

I have wondered, with Epsom salts when they give a weight for water treatment if they mean the anhydrous or hydrate form.
Epsom salts are very hygroscopic and are used to dry things in the pharmaceutical industry.

No doubt it will be the hydrate, but it will make a difference if you dry the salts in the oven first for what ever reason (maybe they're in big wet clumps) as you'll be added too much.

I found them in the chemist in Sainsbury's!

Thanks Chaps, think I'm going to leave the water treatment for another brew as I haven't got time now.

Good old campden tablet will be the most my water will be receiving today but the next brew is going to have the full works, gypsum, CRS and epsom salts. Looking forward to seeing water difference it makes.

Out water is hard as anything so I guess it helps get the most out of the hops but doesn't half make a mess on the element of my burco!

Farm/pet suppliers have them as well. You can buy gig 20kilo bags for about £15 i think!!

I just cheat though and use mineral water. 5 litres for £0.99p from the Co-op - cant go wrong really

    Cheers

Yes I used to use bottle water for all my brews but can't be arsed lugging them all home from the shop and to be honest tap water (treated with a campden tablet to remove the chlorine) seems to work just fine. I just wanted to experiment with water treatment to see if its worth it.

Think I'll check out the local pet shop for epsom salts so thanks for that.
