Double brew
Right, hello.
First of all, it's been ages since I've even though about doing a brew.
So I'm going to make up for it and do a double brew this weekend.
I'm thinking the good Ole Vanilla porter as its always well received, and I'm also going to recreate my first ever AG brew as that also went down a storm. But I think I'll be able to improve it with some of the things I've learnt in the past year.
Brake Fluid (a dark larger, of sorts)
5000.00 gm Lager Malt (3.9 EBC) Grain 83.33 %
500.00 gm Crystal Malt(135.0 EBC) Grain 8.33 %
500.00 gm Vienna Malt (6.9 EBC) Grain 8.33 %
62.00 gm Saaz [3.30 %] (60 min) Hops 21.1 IBU
15.00 gm Saaz [2.80 %] (60 min) (First Wort Hop) Hops 4.3 IBU
50.00 gm Saaz [2.80 %] (15 min) Hops 6.5 IBU
15.00 gm Saaz [2.80 %] (5 min) Hops 0.8 IBU
Wyeast 2206
Est Original Gravity: 1.053
Est Final Gravity: 1.014
Estimated Alcohol by Vol: 5.11 %
Bitterness: 32.7 IBU
Est Color: 20.2 EBC
Vanilla porter recipe is on here already so won't post it again.

Sound like a goodun Varnish. I have never used the first wort process but I hear it can really enhance bitterness taste and aroma. Did you do this on the original or is that the change you were talking about?
Always nice to see a post from ya matey, keep us posted on it.

when do you add first wort hops as the times are the same for both (60 mins)?

Thanks guys.
First wort hops are added to the kettle when you let in the runnings from the mash tun.
You leave them in the kettle as you bring it to the boil.
Here is some more info:

I did use First wort hops in the original recipe. But I didn't really understand the concept and removed them from the kettle before the boil.

Interesting. I hadn't even heard of it.
I'm really interested in hop additions at the moment. Planning to brew the same beer with same hops and same IBU but using 2 completely different hop schedules to measure the difference between heavily weighted to early additions compared to the complete opposite so I can taste what the difference is.
This now throws something else into the mix so be really interested in your results.
Fermenting:

Sorry Guys.
I've been busy...well. Drunk actually.
I managed to get one made over the weekend. The brake fluid larger.
It's fermenting nicely. Its got that surfer larger yeast smell so you know it good.
I used saflarger (23?) yeast as my Wyeast 2206 culture was past it.
I did take a couple of pics I'll upload them later.
Forgot the Irish moss, but it looks okay. I might have to use some finnnnnnings to get it to clear.
I decided that using the same kettle as a HLT and a boiler is just not working for me anymore. So want to build a boiler for the next brew.
I want to use a big 60L fermenter with twin coils.
Like Nath's (I think?).
So I'll be buying one of those next week and having the second brew sometime after that.

Mmmmmmmmmm eggs!
I think I may purchase a 60ltr tub as my 30ltr jobbie is too close for comfort when she gets a rollin' Syin that there has been some good buys on ebay (all of which I missed by the obligitory £2 worth). A 46ltr burco wash boiler, mint and went for £50!
That said, you cant beat diy!
