BeermonkeyDead Space...

1 year ago | Neil (Member)

Hi All,

Happy New Year and hope everyone had a boozy and great Christmas.

I have noticed on several forums "Dead Space" being mentioned. Now being relatively new to this brewing lark i was just wondering could someone explain to me what the "Dead Space" is please? How does this affect my brewing?..

Thanks
Neil

Dead space is the space below the tap line on boilers, mashtun and fermenters. Deadspace traps wort as its below the tap and therefore gives us less final product. The more deadspace you have across your equipment the less beer you will end up with.

Ah. One more thing to add to the knowledge base, and one more Beersmith mystery explained.

If you're not living on the edge..... you're taking up too much space!!

Planning: - To get some more brews on now the weather's a bit cooler
    Fermenting: - Ginger Beer experiment
Conditioning: - A normal bitter with Styrians
    Drinking: - All of it!!

Ah right... so if i've hardly any wort left at the bottom of my boiler below my tap then i've got a good amount of dead space?

That explains that one nicely... cheers Greg. I know it was a daft question but it was something i'd always wanted to know.

    It can also referr to:-

    a) - A game made by EA

    or

    b) - (anatomy) The space in the trachea, bronchi, and other air passages which contains air that does not reach the alveoli during respiration, the amount of air being about 140 milliliters. Also known as anatomical dead space.
(medicine) A cavity left after closure of a wound.
(physiology) A calculated expression of the anatomical dead space plus whatever degree of overventilation or underperfusion is present; it is alleged to reflect the relationship of ventilation to pulmonary capillary perfusion. Also known as physiological dead space.
(thermodynamics) A space filled with gas whose temperature differs from that of the main body of gas, such as the gas in the capillary tube of a constant-volume gas thermometer.

But I suppose it will probably be what Greg said.

Drinkin' - nowt, it's all gone
    Plannin'-
Loads a beer after an upgrade!

The area inside a used coffin?

Dead space is a real pain. The way to void it is to have bottom draining equipment - but if that's not possible there are a couple of ways of minimising it. The easiest - or best is to have a grain or hop filter which is angled down into the bottom of the tun/boiler. If you attach a hose to the tap, the end can be made to stretch below the bottom of the vessel and a siphoning effect can be created, emptying it. Someone I met put pebbles in the bottom of their tun

Beer will get you through the times of no money better than money will get you through the times of no beer
(with grateful thanks to the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers and slightly adapted)
