nath812Damn Damn Damn Damn :(

Well after hearing good things about tony's tribute clone i thought I would stock up with some goodies (ta Greg) and last night I sorted out all the grain and hops n water n stuff.

Went to work for 6am till 11am got home and found my hydrometer broken so got the mash on and cycled to town to get another. 1st bad thing. Then when I added the first bit of hops I noticed something black fall in and I though it was just a "toasted hop" so thought nothing of it.

So the brew is 80c and im steeping some wicked smelling bobek and williamette when I start to stir and pull out the black thing which looks like rubber, sure enough half melted black weird stuff. God knows where it came from but I hope it don't ruin the beer. This would be my first casualty so nott to bad of a ratio.

Still, I managed a brew and Im doing a styrian stunner next week so all is good.

    1. Interrogate the missus
    2. Check all bath/sink plugs attached

Damn nath ... that's not good. Any idea what it was originally?

I wouldn't worry too much, rubber shouldn't melt at the temps we're using... a lot of seals (not performing or kiss from roses type seals) are rubber, so with any luck you'll be ok. (Umm.. unless it stuck to your element)

Can you smell any plastic/rubber from the brew once it has cooled?

I haven't brewed for about 5 weeks and I'm starting to twitch.

    Plugs!

I cant smell or taste rubber. It may have been off the roof/from a tree though. I dunno, still I will wait and see. I think I will go back to fly sparging after this as my efficiency is 10% lower but as a bonus my elements were a little bit caked after the last few brews as I havnt cleaned them and the rolling boil wasnt like a volcano this time but a better gentler rolling boil. 23ltrs easily achived at 1047.

Gigedy gigedy, and my mate gave me a prezzie today I will post piccys later in the wek.
    hehehe.

Ah .. pleased to hear there's no lasting damage caused! Odd with your efficiency though, did you try a double sparge this time? 10% is a lot, I'd be tempted to go back fly too!

Fingers crossed then Nath. You should be okay if it fell into the boiler any nasties will have been boiled.

Only went for the single brew then?

I'm going to clear my garage out later to make space for brewing so I can get a late night one on next week as I've only got 1 full cornie left.

    Planning:Maybe a lager.

Couldnt gather the strength to do a double. Working earlys all weekend and a wedding after party on the same day so I played it safe! I was gonna brew today and got the go ahead from SWMBO but I havnt got any water ready Anyone know how long it takes for a campden tablet and crs to get the water sorted?!

That esb yeast you gave me was awesome. I pitched at 6.30 and got in at 12 and there was a great heeeed on it already. Its the first pack I had where it wasnt a runny liquid but big ol' lumps of yeast in yeastie liquid! Its a keeper when I slap it in secondary!

I didn't do it. Bum. May do one next week but on holiday the week after so it will have to be soon and a late one. Time to do my first overnight mash in the next few days.
