craig79coopers lager spraymalt question

10 months ago | craig79 (Member)

Hi everyone

this is probably a simple sounding question to most of you guys but a bit confusing to me, i have a coopers lager kit(which ive brewed before) and i have always used a kilo of brewers sugar to brew it with, this time however i have bought a kilo of light spray malt to replace the sugar.

Is this wise? and will it give the lager a different taste, colour, body etc?

Cheers for any advice

Hi Craig yes it is wise, are you using Muntons? When i have made the coopers lager i normally use Muntons beer enhancer 1kg pack or the 500g muntoms extra light or sometimes light with 500g brewing sugar. But yes with the 1kg of spraymalt it will have a nice frothy head and the lager seem not so thin also a better taste.
Let us know what you think when you have made it.

    Planning-Connoiseur Johannisberg Riesling
    Fermenting-Nowt
Conditioning-Proper Job Comp Beer,Kenridge White Merlot
    Drinking-Raspberry/Lime cider,Grenache Blush Rose,Coopers modified lager
    SG Chardonnay Wine

    Yes, yes, yes and yes.

Of course its wise, trying different things is what makes this hobby so good. It'll make the beer a little more malty, make it a touch darker and give it more body. Perhaps it might turn out a little bit like a Maerzen.

Planning: Wheat beer fermented with Schneider Weisse yeast, a Stout, lots of hoppy pale ales
    Fermenting: Marynka pseudo-lager
    Maturing/Conditioning:
Drinking: Wheat beer, ESB, Vienna lager & shop bought stuff

    ^ Ditto wot he said...

Started using half brewing sugar/half beer enhancer with the Coopers Aussie kit quite a while ago just 'cos I had some hanging about and have done it that way ever since. Defo more depth to the flavour... nice for quaffin' in the garden when mates pop over! Hic!...

It’s funny how women change. I never really noticed it until I set up my hidden webcam in Top Shop.

Drinking: Flasher the Dasher, St Peter's Ruby, Thunderbolt, Beam Reach, the last few bottles of Autumn Cider.
    Fermenting: TTL and WTA.
Planning: A Proper Job extract clone !

Definitely the way to go, Craig. Next time you can try adding some hops as well, in the form of a 'hop tea'.
Hamish is dead right. It's the experimnting and tweaking the beer to your liking that makes it the fascinating hobby it is.
Spraymalt can be a bit difficult to handle as it picks up moisture instantly. Best way is, when you add it, cut the top off the bag, sprinkle it in without delay while thrashing away at the mix like a demented dervish with a balloon whisk.

If you're not living on the edge..... you're taking up too much space!!

Planning: - To get some more brews on now the weather's a bit cooler
    Fermenting: - Ginger Beer experiment
Conditioning: - A normal bitter with Styrians
    Drinking: - All of it!!

Hi guys and thanks for the quick reply's

Yes the spray malt is muntons that i'm about to use. i've got a coopers lager kit and a coopers lager kit, i'm going to brew them both at same time, i'm going to put 500g of light spray malt and 500g of coopers beer enhancer in each batch and see what the results are, i like leaving the beer in bottles for 4-5 month before drinking, so might be a while before i put an update!!
The next batch i do i will try adding some hops and see where that leads me.
    Thanks for the tips guys

Be careful to watch the temperature on the european lager as it ferments at alot lower temp than the Coopers Aussie Lager.
