Do you have any particular reason for wanting a conical flask?

I've got a diy stir plate, and I use a demijohn.
Does the job, and probably easier to get and cheaper than a conical.

    One of these will do...

The most important thing is to keep everything clean and sterile.

Planning: Wheat beer fermented with Schneider Weisse yeast, a Stout, lots of hoppy pale ales
    Fermenting: Marynka pseudo-lager
    Maturing/Conditioning:
Drinking: Wheat beer, ESB, Vienna lager & shop bought stuff

The good thing about Erienmeyer conicals is that you can put them on the hob to boil up the starter then straight into cold water avoiding sterlising which is much easier. You may need anti foam if a big starter is being made though.

I've been doing 2 litre starters in a 2 litre Erienmeyer on a stir plate and working out well. Just spray a bit of anti foam onto the top before putting on the hob. If you don't use a stir plate then it may bubble over.

I've always wondered at the fascination of stir-plates, why people seem to go on about them - now you've said that it makes perfect sense! Of course!
There's some good instructions somewhere on how to make a DIY one..maybe on youtube. Nice project for the weekend - if the missus is in a good mood!

Beer will get you through the times of no money better than money will get you through the times of no beer

Basically its keeps the yeast in suspension for longer enabling it to use more available oxygen, stay in contact ith sugar for longer and expells co2 quicker. All this makes healthier and a larger volume of yeast.

If you get one of these expensive things it'll boil it for you as well:

I made a stir plate with a computer fan, a hard drive magnet, an ice cream tub, and a variable voltage transformer to control speed.
All stuff I had in the house.
