User has not uploaded an avatarCider kit not starting

1 year ago | chris-red (Member)

I kicked off 2 kits the other night a lager and a cider the Lager started bubbling away really quickly, but the cider hasn't it has been almost 48 hours the kit said it would start in 24, I wondering if it is warm enough, it said in the instructions between 21 and 24 degrees and I'm certain it is not that not at night. I was think maybe pooring a little hot water in tonight to try to kick start it, is this a good idea? Any other suggestions stirring it more maybe?

    Hello Chris,

I am not 100 percent sure on adding hot water but I'm sure others users can shed light on that.

However I'd give it a bit more time, I've only recently started brewing and its very hard to stop checking on it. My first kit was a ginger beer and it took AGES to get going. Over 4 days. It turns out it was going all along just not at enough gusto to really be noticeable.

    Planning - first AG brew
In the Barrel - Golden Ale (woodfords)
In the Fermenter - Elderflower wine
    Drinking - Nothing home made

I wouldnt put any water in it mate. Where is is fermenting? Have you tried taking a hrdrometer reading to see if its dropped (thats the only real way of seeing if its started)? Sometimes you wont notice much but its still doing its thing. 48hrs is no biggie, may well take longer to get going. All kits are different!

    Conditionin'/Drinkin' - OPA Pale
    Conditionin' - LEB Pale
    Conditionin' - Thwaits Nutty Black
    Plannin' - A user upper!

Generaly I find a good stir & slosh about does the trick if I become a little worried.

If you think it gets a little cold at night then wrap an old coat around your fermenter. I have an old life saver coat I wrap mine with.

No no with the hot water
