Batch prime the beer and use a bottling stick, also if they are new bottles and clean a non rinse sanitiser such as videne or star san will make life a lot easier. Have a search for batch or bulk priming.

Thanks for the advice nath, I bottled up last night, bit of a mess really as I did not batch prime and did not have a bottling stick, I think in my fumblings I lost about 2.5 pints mostly to the kitchen floor.

I did try a half straight from the fermentor syphon and it was ok so hopefully after the sugar has done its bit in the bottles it should be great.

My final question was how long should I keep the bottles at room temperature to get the second stage going before I move them to the cold room of the house

    thanks again

    Lee,

I've been there believe me.... first time i bottled my beer i ended up with more on me than inside after being drunk. I've now bought some PET Coopers bottles bought from this website and a 25ltr fermation bucket with a tap on it. The opening of the bottle is just big enough to put over the tap and hey presto no more mess apart from the odd drip.

Rule of thumb reference time left to be drunk it's roughly 1 week per abv %. So if the beer came out at 4% then 4 weeks before being drunk and so on...But sneaking a bottle here and there doesn't do any harm either i mean you have to taste these things of course.

Oh just realised what your original question was doh! I leave my bottles for a couple of days in a warm place then follow the above. It's worked for me so far.

You'll know when the secondary fermentation is working because the bottles are harder than Chuck Norris! We all no how hard he is too.

    Thanks for the advice Neil,

I have those glass bottles so is there any other way I can tell that the fermentation is going on, or hope for the best and pray they do not explode

Chuck Norris is possibly the second hardest man alive after steven segal

it's a good job Chuck Norris isn't alive otherwise he'd be coming after you with a comment like that!

Conditioning: GW Bathams clone & elderflower champagne
