dandanCalling northern beer lovers!! Become a beer judge!!

2 years ago | dandan (Moderator)

Saw this in a local paper today:

The North is the biggest region in the Society of Independent Brewers and this year its annual beer competition is being split into two parts to cope with the growing number of breweries wanting to compete.

The first part of the regional awards will be judged on November 6th in at Hawkshead Brewery in the Lake District and will be followed by a SIBA beer festival. The winners will go on to the national final in February.

Three categories will be judged at Hawkshead Brewery – bitter, strong ale and bottled beer. The remaining categories will be judged at the Scarisbrick Hotel, Southport, in January.

This year SIBA, the organisation that represents independent local brewers, has launched a search for beer lovers to help judge the beer competition. SIBA are inviting up to 10 members of the public who love beer to join industry professionals and beer experts to decide the region's best beers.

Alex Brodie, a SIBA North Trustee who is also the MD of Hawkshead Brewery, says: "There's been an extraordinary boom in the number of small breweries in recent years. Proper beer has broken through and everyone is now starting to appreciate it. There were just four micro breweries in 1971 and there are now 600.

"SIBA represents nearly 500 breweries. These awards are a celebration of the region's best beers and we want to recruit a good cross section of judges from today's beer drinkers, including women and younger people. It's a chance to help choose the very best beers across the North of England, alongside some of the most experienced people in the brewing industry."

Each judge will sample up to 16 beers in a blind tasting, scoring them on appearance, aroma, flavour, aftertaste and saleability.

If you live in the North of England, are over 18 and think you have what it takes to help judge the region's best ales, send your contact details, including address, with up to 100 words saying when and how you discovered proper beer. Applications should be sent to BeerCompetitions@SIBA.co.uk and the judges will be selected by the SIBA North Trustees.

The closing date is 1 p.m. on Monday, October 26th.

All I can say is.................enjoy. I spent a whole day at the hawkshead brewery for my stag do a couple of year ago!

Make sure you try the prok pies with the onion/beer chutney! They give away the spent mash to a local farm who feeds it to his pigs and then supplies the brewery with growlers. They also do a home made onioin/bitter chutney which goes just fantatic with the pie and a pint of there session bitter :o)

oh..............and the brewerie's quite impressive as well!

    Cheers

    mike

Mike... you spent a whole day in a brewery as a stag party? Outstanding! I wonder what the missus would say to getting a divorce...?

Beer will get you through the times of no money better than money will get you through the times of no beer
