jimw75@googlemail.comBrupak spray malt, lumpy stuff!!

10 months ago | Jim (Member)

Fellas,

Just brewed my slightly tarted up Coopers Real Ale that you were helping me out with the other day and had planned to use Munton's Extra Light Spray Malt, but BrewUK did not have any in so shipped a Brupak Extra Light Spray Malt instead, view was it is pretty much the same stuff.

I added the spray malt to the 2 litres of hot water and extract as instructions but it was really lumpy, stirred it for ages and could not get it all dissolved, so I left it with quite a few clumps of goo, added the hops (my first experiment with dry hopping) and have left to ferment. I did a Caxton ale recently and used Munton's Dark Spray Malt, added this at the same stage and is dissolved fine and the brew has turned out really well.

What do you reckon, could it be my first stuff up? Thinking that I should only go with Munton's in the future.

Cheers,

Jim.

Hi Jim. As far as I know, Muntons are the only supplier of Spraymalt in the UK, so the BruPak is likely to be theirs anyway. DME can be a nightmare. The water you add it to should be close to boiling. Note: Add DME to water, not the other way around. Don't dump it all in at once. I always found that sprinkling it in whilst going like a demented dervish with an balloon egg whisk did the trick. Hand held food mixer, maybe? If there are any lumps, fish them out and have another go, breaking them up as you go.

I passed the Muntons Maltings today and saw a lorry collecting malt. What was on the side of the lorry? Thomas Fawcett & Sons Ltd. Share and share alike, eh?

If you're not living on the edge..... you're taking up too much space!!

Planning: - To get some more brews on now the weather's a bit cooler
    Fermenting: - Ginger Beer experiment
Conditioning: - A normal bitter with Styrians
    Drinking: - All of it!!

Thanks fellas, probably a bit late for pulling them out, but know what to do for next time

Sounds like the brew kit industry is like all others, massive commercial consolidation where one holding group actually distributions all the same kit under many brands!

Have a top weekend, all the best

    Jim.

Best advice I ever got for spray malt - add it to the water when it is luke warm .... it works! Bring it to the boil once already stirred in. As Saracen says... a whisk can be handy too!

Beer will get you through the times of no money better than money will get you through the times of no beer
