Brewing Kriek 1st Time- Any advice?
Hi
Just took delivery of my first ever beer kit (am currently into my third extract brew however), a fine looking Kriek...for the Missus, no?
Am looking forward to getting it going. Just wondered if anyone had any tips or experience of brewing a kriek up and if so if there is anything I should change?
I have to ask, is the 500g sugar that they are stating on the instruction right? is it better to use extract instead or just stick with the sugar?
Am going to brew it up this evening (if I am allowed into the kitchen) so any advice greatfully (and hpefully quickly) recieved

If this is a sour beer then don't use the same fermenter again for non-sour beers. I understand that the bacteria used to sour is very difficult to get rid of and can affect standard beers. I find it hard to believe but that's what I've read.

I made a cherry lambic... essentially a Kriek but with added Lactobacillus and a few other yeasts.
Might be worth a read.

I'll take that advice and keep the FV Im using for sour beers, thanks for the tip.
Cheery lambic too much for me at the moment but a great read. Cant imagine what that madness must taste like what with that crazy amount of yeast....probably like the first time I tasted olives.....

Ok so I did all the necessary and the beer was bubbling along nicely for two days in the FV and now it seems to have stopped fermenting(?) There are some foam bubbles on the surface but cant see much activity and airlock hasnt bubbled/shifted for 24 hours. Smells fine, looks fine.
Am I being over anxious about it? Is it dead? Or is it just slowing down after initial ferment? (It just seems a bit quick to get to the stage of slowing down, my other brews have usually taken a good five days or so to get to that point)

It depends on the yeast and temps, I'm sure it's fine, but It would be o.k to give it a rousing with a sterilised spoon/paddle if it's only been 2-3 days, and the gravity is still above 1030 say.
Did you take an initial hydrometer reading, and have you taken one at this stage?

Didnt take an initial hydrometer reading, stupidly enough, completely forgot (still getting used to this lark) but the OG stated on the tin was 1053
Will go try to get a hydrometer readign and get back to you; and I'll give it a stir at the same time, get that lazy yeast going....but maybe not tonight cos Ive just spent three hours cutting the grass and I may pass out in the next few minutes.....

Gave it a stir two days ago...nothing. Moved it to somewhere warmer, nothing. Just took a hydrometer reading: looks like the brew stopped fermenting cos there was little left to ferment, the hydrometer reading was 1010....time to rack the swine....
And i just managed to spill my 2nd last bottle of Way to Amarillo all over my keyboard....what a waste of a good beer....
