simonb_13Break Material

1 year ago | simonb_13 (Member)

I've used Irish Moss in previous brews and have purchased some Protofloc for the next one. With regards to the break material you get at the end of the cooling process. Any tips on keeping that out of the FV? Does it all drop to the bottom of the boiler naturally or can you strain it or what?

Planning: Something with Styrians, Discovery Clone
Fermenting:
Condtioning:
Drinking: Twibute Clone, PJ Clone

I leave it to settle down with the hops for 1/2 hr after chilling. Then run the wort though the hop bed and hop strainer into the fermenter.

Yes, as Greg says, leave it to settle whilst cooling and give it up to 30 mins extra. A friend of mine always gives it a good stir to build up a 'whirlpool' so that all the crap gravitates toward the middle but I've never bothered with that. Break material is so fine that any messing with it can just put it straight back into solution.

A word of advice though, only use a half-teaspoon with protafloc - don't give it the whole spoonful as it says on the label. It is sooooper efficient. I always notice little gelatin 'balls' at the bottom of the boiler when I clean it.

Ahhhhh, so thats what Im getting now! Is that due to the protofloc?

On another note, I have been whirlpooling and it seems to do the job, probably not really worth it but in a large pan like mine its quite cool to see the cones of hops and much in the middle.

Weird stuff isn't it! Freaked me out when I saw it first, I thought something had broken!

Maybe I should give mine a stir ... what sort of hop strainer do you have nath - and where is it in the boiler?

I got a curled copper pipe with 3mm holes in it, but I did buy some s/s mesh from ebay and I was gonna make a bag though I havnt bothered yet. The copper pipe I got is directly on the bottom but the boiler still has a fair bit of dead space in it. I would sort it out but for the moment im quite happy with my setup......until the shiney mash tun that is!

    That's a lovely boiler nath!
I really have to make up a strainer from a mesh .. I was reading about how much less wort you lose to the hops if you use pellets... and I'm so in love with my beer that I hate giving any of it up! Need a bag from mesh though if using pellets.

I've got some Protofloc tablets from a rival supplier. Never seen them anywhere else but they work great and I've never seen any residue. You use 1 in a 23lt brew and they cost £1 for 10

If you're not living on the edge..... you're taking up too much space!!

Planning: - To get some more brews on now the weather's a bit cooler
    Fermenting: - Ginger Beer experiment
Conditioning: - A normal bitter with Styrians
    Drinking: - All of it!!

I've got some Protafloc tablets from a rival supplier too, I'm brewing tomorrow.

Sorry Greg, I know I've stepped over the line, I'll try not to do it again.

    Thanks y'all for the advice.

I've not got a hop strainer but the tap is above the crud level so it seems to get left behind.

I'll defo leave it for 30 mins once cooled and give it a stir to get the cone of crud.

Next project is the hop strainer and how to position it whilst keeping the rack at the bottom of the boiler that keeps my bag of the bottom. <- That didn't come out quite as I wanted!

No problem. Thanks for not linking to said supplier though.

I'll get some tablets in as I know where to get them from. Watch this space.

I would like to try this protafloc stuff.
I've read somewhere online (never find it again) that the powder's effectiveness isn't quite as good as the tablets.
I think gelatin in relation to the powder was mentioned there too.

Also, the tablets are HUGE. More like a cake!

I will never go back to irishm oss after using Protofloc. I use the powder and Im amazed by the effectiveness of 1 tsp, if the tablets are even better I would only need to use half! I rate it as high as a texan with a new gun and a slapping glove.

    (thats high)
