Bottling/priming
I'm planning on bottling the whole lot of the forum brew and I want to put it into secondary fermentation so let is drop a bit clearer.
Question is that I normally mix all the priming sugar together, add to the bottling bin then transfer the beer to that and bottle. Eliminating the need to prime each bottle and ensuring even mix of priming sugar.
As I'm already transferring to secondary fermenter, I don't really want to rack again so how does everyone (who secondary ferments) prime the beer before bottling?

Hi Greg
i think the best way to do this would be to mix the sugar/water into syrup to 500ml on the hob as normal. Let it cool a bit and then pop it into a 1 water bottle with the sports cap on (hope you know what i mean). make sure its all nice and sterilised. then put the end into the brew and start squeezing.
Very the height of the bottle in the brewand move around the FV gently. this should give you as even distribution as possible
Hope this helps
Cheers

suppose you if you were really gentle, you could give it a cheeky little stir as well?

I do what you do Greg. Boil some water, add the sugar and boil for a few minutes. Lift tthe lid on the secondary and (once cooled) add the liquid slowly. I do give it a cheeky stir :o) very gently. I've never had a problem with this.

Thanks Both. That was what I was thinking but didn't want to end up with some flat/overly fizzy beers.

I have purchased a Coopers Australian Lager kit and 1KG Brewing Sugar. Although the kit needs 1KG I want to set aside enough for priming. The kit makes 23 Litres and the plan is to bulk prime, then bottle/crown cap.
First question is how much priming sugar will I need for 23 litres?
Second question is once fermentation is complete, would there still be a possibility of exploding bottles during the carbonation process?
Thanks

Hi JH
Just been reading that .5 teaspoon (recommended amount per 500ml) is 1.45g. That means that 50 x 500ml x 1.45g = 72g. This seems a little short to me. I use BeerSmith to work through all my calculations and it seems to arrive at approximately 130g per 25ltr brew. So there you go - somewhere between 72 and 130g should do it. If it were me I'd split the difference and go for somewhere around 100g.
I've been thinking on dropping my priming sugar anyway. Most literature says to use one teaspoon per 500ml and that would be much closer to what BeerSmith is telling me to use. However, this book I'm reading at the moment says .5 teaspoon. Hmmmm.

Thanks Tony.
I have read between 3-5 ounces for 5 Gallons. Your estimation of 100g is 3.52 ounces so that looks pretty good to me.
Whichever way I will either enjoy or take cover!!
