Bottling Beer
Apologies in advance if this is a silly questions, I've been told and read all sorts!
Once my brew has finished fermenting I'm going to bottle it. On the instructions of my kit it says to add a carbonation drop into each bottle. However I've also heard that I could add an amount of sugar into each bottle
If this is true how much sugar do I add to each bottle. I'm using 1 pint bottles.
Are there benefits to using carbonation drops?
Planning - first AG brew
In the Barrel - Golden Ale (woodfords)
In the Fermenter - Elderflower wine

Use 1/2 teaspoon of sugar / 500ml should give a good carbonation. You can add a little more if you want it extra fizzy.
Carbonation drops are good and less messy but any household sugar will do the job.
The easiest way to bottle is to get another 25 litre fermenter with drum tap and little bottler. Dissolve all the sugar in a small amount of water then boil for 5 mins to sterilise (some people use a bit of the beer so not to dilute but I always just use water). Add this to the 25 litre bin (sterilised of course), then syphon your beer into that and bottle using the little bottler. This not only ensure nice even mix of priming sugar but also makes life a lot easier and also gets the beer off all the sediment.
If you plan to bottle quite a bit then its a well worth while investment which I'm sure many others on here will agree with.

Cheers Greg,
I hadn't thought of using a second fermenter. In fact I hadn't given the actual bottling process much thought at all. I was just going to use the syphon that came with the kit.
Thanks for the advice much appreciated!

That will work but you'll find it a lot easier with a second fermenter.

Hi Starkie,
Agree whole heartedly with greg. The extra fermenter makes bottling a breeze and will save time in the long run.
I bottled a finlandia cider kit last weekend. I made 16.5 litres and primed with 105 grammes of brewing sugar but to be honest, 120g may have been better. I have some fizz but could do with more.
Using a bottling stick (like a little bottler) really helps.
I left at room temp for about 1 week and now in the garage - ready to drink but will leave for a couple of weeks before sampling any more.
