Bottling barreled beer
Hi,
My lovely missus got me a beer kit for my birthday last week, only cos she wants to drink it :-D.
This is the first time I have brewed anything and although the instructions were a bit vague at times I checked here and all seems to have gone to plan and it is now in the barrel for the second stage.
I didn't want to get into bottling just yet and am quite happy with a barrel under the stairs. However I would like to transport some samples. Can I simply fill up bottles (sterilized) from the barrel for drinking immediately? Ie I want to drive from Plymouth to Bristol with some samples for a night in at a mates house
Also my second question. I got the St Peters Ruby Red which from what I can tell from initial tasting is very nice. Are their any similar ales to this one? I am not keen on traditional bitters and like the more flowery hop taste.
Incidentally I think this website is evil. I now have to get a second barrel so I can have two on the go so I don't run out. :-p
Thanks.

Others may have more experience than me on this but I think if you're careful it should be OK. I guess you've already carbonated your beer when it when from fermentation to barrel. If that's the case, you'll have to draw it off into the bottle carefully as not to get too much head. I think tilting the bottle so the beer run down the inside of the bottle rather than straight on to the base would be a good idea.
You'll probably get some air in it during this process. So it'll have to be drunk reasonable soon after bottling. I read elsewhere that people who barrel beer ofter take some bottle out of it to transport so you should be OK.

Hi there!
Yep you can bottle your beer from a barrel ok, as long as the beer has finished fermenting in the barrel then just pour some into the sterilized bottles and add a half tsp of sugar to re-carb (leave at room temp for a good week) if you are not drinking for a while. If you have a spare s30valve/keg top and a co2 canister then you could blast some co2 into the bottles before filling to minimise air but I dont think it will matter too much.
In regards to a kit that may tickle your fancy - why not try the new St.Peters IPA that brew now has in stock? Being an IPA you will probably find its more hoppy! Wherry is another fine pint though, great malt taste but with a nice hoppy kick!

Thanks chaps.
Yes I already added the sugar. Just tried another sneaky taste, yeah I know, impatient but I have to check its ok :-D. It was a tiny drop though and there is pressure.
It's been 24 hours since it went in the barrel and worried the temperature is too high. I dont have anywhere cool to put it unless I put it outside in shaded spot. Our house is hot in the summer and cold in the winter and no garage.
I will definitely try one of those two kits next. Also looking recipe packs if I feel brave later on.

Haha, sneaky sips are just one of the pro's of making your own beer. If you are worried about the temp then you could find a 2nd hand fridge on eBay or freecycle.

Bah. No room for another fridge. Will see how it goes for now. It does taste really good though and most definitely alcoholic. I actually preferred that to a bottle of Tribute I had in the fridge.

LOL. Panic ye not. Think you may have misread, or I lost the ability to type English. I preferred my brew to the Tribute.

Good work. I must admit that I like Tribute rather a lot but the Ruby Red is a very nice pint.
I would recommend the Woodfordes Admirals Reserve, Wherry or why not try the New St Peters IPA? Alternatively any of the Brupaks range are always good.
