Brew UK Forum | Beer Kits
Bottles or keg thing
Hello,
I have done a few kits over the past couple of years, and always produced some decent beer, bottling the stuff after the first fermentation in plastic bottles with a couple of those coopers sugar drops (less fiddly than actual sugar). However this means I have loads of bottles spread around my little one bed flat, which the Mrs is no longer happy with!
So I am thinking of getting one of those 5 gallon kegs, but can’t seem to find any info on how to use them. Do I just chuck a load of sugar in there, add the beer after the first ferment and leave it for a few weeks and then pour beer out of it as and when I like? And what is the deal with the CO2 gas arrangements??
Thanks!

I do kits and use both kegs and bottles. Got the kegs from here as well as the CO2. you just add about 2 oz sugar to the keg. You only need the CO2 if you drink the beer faster than it makes its own. I think I have needed it on one or two kegs and that was in part because the keg cap was not on right

You will find that the barreled beer wont have the "fizz" that bottles do. This is because the barrel cannot hold as much pressure as bottles do, therefore the beer is carbonated but not fizzy.

Nath, sounds good for stout and ales then, but to be avoided for larger and cider?
