Mr HBottled AG beer from bottle

1 year ago | Mr H (Member)

Hi Guys, Just tried one of my AG Exmoor Gold's from a bottle (2nd July bottled). Pours with an intial fizz and head vanishes almost immediately. The beer has very slight carbonation which is very small compared to a kit brew. The only thing i do differently to a kit with my my AG brews is that i rack them to a second FV. Any guesses what the problem(s) may be? Is it that im not getting enough yeast into a bottle? I prime with 0.5 teaspoon of glucose which i did for kit beer.
The Exmoor tastes absoulutely gorgeous and it is crystal clear so no problems there.
Regards
H

The head can dissapear if the glass has not been rinsed of washing up liquid properly, as for the flatness....hmmmmm unsure, what size bottle was it and was it a swing top or did you cap it?

Hi Nath, Glass was nice and clean - well rinsed. 500ml bottles which had nice tight fitting crown caps fitted.
Love your setup with the gas - whats your verdict now you have done a few brews? I find it really economical on the propane.
    Cheers

Yeah gas is good, it take a bit longer for it to reach boil and its not a vigorus as my last boiler but I suppose thats because its not directly heating the water. A 3.9kg has lasted me 2 ag brews and seems to be quite full still so its great not to worry about a) - the cost of my 2 2.4kw elements b) - the amount of wires trailled everywhere and c) - not getting electrocuted by my boilovers!#

Dunno about about the lack of carbonation, how long were they in the warm for before you moved it to a colder place? Very strange though, try another and see if there is a difference.

That would be my guess. Not long enough in the warm when it was first put in the bottle. I did it with one of my bitters. I thought I could get away with putting it straight in the garage. It was summer after all! But there very is low carbonation with this brew.

    Hi Mr H

I have just experienced the same thing with my Wheat Beer. I fermnted for 10 days, secondary for 1 week. Added 1 generous teaspoon of brewing sugar (which is alot but I wanted a raging fizz). After 4 weeks it was flat as a witches T##. I tried around 3 bottles just to discount the dodgey cap issue.
I was advised to shake the bottles....so over the next 10 days I gave them a good shake at least 3 times. A week later, which was last friday I opened 3 bottles to find them overflowing out of the bottle!
I have kept the bottles in my garage & house which has been at an avergae temp of 18C give or take.
My theory is that because of the long ferment & condition this may have slowed/reduced the yeast to a point its hard for it to get going again even if it can.
My last resort would have been to open all bottles & put into my corny keg to force carbonate.
Hope they kick in for you soon!!

Cheers Gazz, Sounds like it certainly is worth a try. Glad this worked well for you. Im going for a shake shortly ... ok, so that sounds bad - will shake my bottles just to clarify things!
One other thing has just dawned on me.... it was staring me in the face as i went into the kitchen, I had two used bottles from my Exmoor & wheat beers. When i have poured the bottle i have been soaking the bottle in a fairy liquid solution to remove sediment before rinsing well and storing when dry. When i used the bottles i used very warm water on the bottles followed by a Videne solution, rinsed, primed and filled with a cap at the end. Damn... 'Fairy liquid' problem Nath mentioned (Well done Nath - Promoted to head of Scotland Yard for brilliant detective work! ) Looks like i created my own problem . Will soaking them in VWP steriliser remove any traces of Fairy before using them next time? or will I need something else?
Yours 'as daft as a brush'

vwp is a strong steriliser so it will be fine, make sure plenty of rinses go after though.

    Nice one dude!
