Hi

I'm going to re-use shop bought bottles for my next brew. How do i know which brands have bottles which are strong enough to hold the beer without breaking during priming?

I've collected mostly Fuller's London Price bottles as they seem like really thick glass. I have noticed some brands are a lot more thinner for recycling purposes, are these reusable?

I've also got a couple of Badger beer bottles, has anyone successfully used this brand for bottling?

Thanks in advance

Hi John, if they have had Ale in them then they will be fine. I've used Badger, Fullers, Hop back and many many more. They all work although some are a bugger to get the labels off.

Just avoid lager bottles like stella as they are thinner.

    Cheers Greg.

    Hi John,

Another little tip is to make sure the ale bottles are compatible with your bottle capper. I've had issues where the glass around the neck of the bottle was too long and thick to allow proper purchase with the capper. Wychwood Hobgoblin is one such ale whose bottle I couldn't reuse.

Yes indeed.. bloody hobgoblin bottles! If they had a proper neck on them their sales would be up by about 50%

    :o)

I've been looking (and drooling) over the wytchwood 'collection' in sainsbury's recently. I think I've got enough bottles now to be able to have a few without crying when the bottle goes into recycling. Think I'll treat myself at the weekend :o)

Has anyone actually had any re-used bottles explode? I was hoping to make use of some cheapo own brand lager bottles, but I'm worried now. Surely even the most rubbish lager could potentially be as gassy as a nice ale?

Just get yourself a bench capper. It will make easy work of capping, including Hob goblin bottles.

If you do a lot of bottling they are a must.
