simonb_13Boil the Hops not the Extract

Anyone tried this approach to extract brewing? Only a small amount of extract is added at the beginning with the remainder being added towards the end or even at the end. It's supposed to produce lighter coloured beer and requires less hops to provide the desired level of bitterness.

I'm brewing up my Thai PA tonight and wanted to try this technique.

Yes, I have lowered the initial volume of DME to allow for shorter brew lenghths so less hops are used so can't see any issues with what you are planning so long as you adjust the hops accordingly. Not sure about the colour being lighter but I guess you will avoid caramelisation so probably will make it a bit lighter.

    Planning:Maybe a lager.

I read up on that a while back. Yes indeed, there is no real reason to boil the extract for very long - just enough to sterilize everything and ensure you have good water.

Beer will get you through the times of no money better than money will get you through the times of no beer
(with grateful thanks to the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers and slightly adapted)

Brewed the Thai PA last night. Put in 200g of Extract at the beginning, 1kg with 10 mins to go and another 10 mins at the end.

Didn't fancy dumping 2kg at the last moment as I wanted to steep some Thai spices for 30 mins and didn't want to drop the temp too much.

Seems to have worked OK. We shall see.

I'm looking forward to hearing how this one turns out as it could go either way with those spices but hopefully it will be a cracker.

    Planning:Maybe a lager.

In the spirit of trying lots of different things in the same brew, I've put it into a Secondary FV and dry hopped with Bobeks! First time for me.

If this turns out OK I'll be amazed. I had a crafty sip when racking into the secondary FV and there was a hint of lime but no ginger, no chilli and no lemongrass. Ho hum. Bottling tomorrow evening if it hasn't gone t*** up in the FV.

Will try with ginger and limeleaves only next time and up the ginger quantity or grate it.
