Birthday brew
Birthday was yesterday.
Went to see the expendables. It wasn't that good.
Heavy on explosions, light on storyline.
Reminded me a lot of "Clear and present danger" with Harrison Ford. That is actually a much better film.
Because of that I've had a late start as I had to clean everything this morning.

Happy birthday chum!
Gota say the expendables....hmmmmmm. At least it bumps up their pensions.
Heard a lot about the vanillia porter from greg. Highly reccomended by him. Good on ya mate, will you be using your own hops?

No Greg talked me out of it. Ha
Nah, Greg gave some very good advice.
This is a confidence building brew as my last couple have been not so great.
So I'm being very conservative with everything.

I know what you mean. The stryian stunner I done last is ok but I totally upped the hops and dry hopped it and I think i should have just stayed with the original recipe. My next will be from GW's book, like you say, for a confidence thang.

Happy Birthday Varnish. Hope it all turns out like the last batch. Its still on my ever growing brew list so hopefully I'll get enough time to brew a batch soon as its definitely a winner.

Bags of stuff:

Mashing:
New boiler:
Mash out:
Try and boil over. I dare ya hahahahahahaha
Cooled wort out:
Good points:
New boiler is very good.
Bad points:
Missed brew length
No cold break.
6 gallons instead of 5! That's never happened before. Will have to adjust method for new equipment.
I think my intercooler is to short.
The top of the wort remains hot. So the proteins float to the top, heat up and re-dissolve. No cold break?

Happy Birthday Varnish!
Looks like a great brew, fantastic colour too! I had a couple of brews with no cold break... happened when I changed to a new irish moss. May well be pure coincidence - but I bought some protafloc and had more break than I knew how to deal with.
You could be right with what you say though, they could be re-dissolving.
(with grateful thanks to the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers and slightly adapted)

I doubt lack of cold break will make any difference, especially in a porter so don't worry about it.
New boiler looks like its doing the business.

It's 4.4 kilowatts you know.

Having a separate HLT and boiler made this brew so much easier.
I'll have to remember to sparge less when using this boiler as the dead space is around 4 times less than the old burco. I'm sure thats where the extra gallon came from.
My efficiency seems to have improved as well. From around 65% to nearer 80%.
So I'm well pleased.
I waited until this morning to pitch.
Beer was reading 18*C, and was dry pitched with 2 packets of Safale S-04.

Burco's have an annoying amount of dead space.

They do. They also only have 2.5 Kilowatts. And that's if all 5 elements are working.
It's fine as a HLT, but for a boiler it's a little under spec.
FG was 1.012
OG was 1.042
so 4% on the nose.
Racked beer to keg yesterday. No need to secondary as it's so dark.
Nice and smooth with a small amount of fruity esters.
After adding the vanilla (29g in 19 Litres) it tastes great. Carmel and chocolate with a nice bitterness to even things out. The flavours will round with time so it'll taste even better in a week or two.
Five days at 5psi with CO2, then switch over to beer gas at around 30psi.
