RoddersAnother one from the Isle of Man.

I am pretty new to this homebrew lark. It all started in my local. I asked for 2 pints of bitter and was told £5.02. Well £2.50+ for a pint crosses the line as far as i am concerned.I know there are cheaper pints in other pubs around here, but as i say, they crossed the line. That was Jan 2nd and its been homebrew all the way. Aint been in a pub since. (£3.50 for a Carling here)

Why have a 6-pack when you can have a keg?

£2.50, best be moving to the Isle of Man, I have to pay £3.05 for Marstons Pedigree. I understand the tax rates are more sensible over there too.

Planning: Vienna lager, Wheat beer fermented with Gutmann yeast, ESB
    Fermenting: Wheat beer
    Maturing/Conditioning:
Drinking: Pseudo-Lager, Oatmeal stout & Shop bought stuff

The pint was Okells. Just a local brewery that makes quite a nice 3.8% bitter. Tax is good if you are married and have a mortgage. I have both and dont pay tax on £20k. That said, if you drive, petrol is £1.25. Meat, bread and milk is pricey aswell, so things tend to level out. Some of us have duck-ponds, most dont.

Okells brew some interesting beers, I take it the more unusual ones are seasonal?. Quite an estate they have too.

Must spend a long weekend over there & see the island properly, was drunk for most of the trip last time, really enjoyed it great place.

Hi Rodders and welcome. What are you brewing then?

Its at least £2.90 a pint for ale round here, unless you go to Whetherspoons which is a great £2.05 a pint but you still can't beat home brewed for price and in fact taste.

    Planning:Maybe a lager.
    Fermenting:
    Conditioning:Pale with Styrians
    Drinking:Cascade Pale Ale, Summer Lightning

When the country is in debt, it will always be the drinkers and smokers who feel the desperate attempt to claw money back. It's us 'sensible' drinkers too not just the 8% cider alcoholics.

    Cough

Sorry .. rant over. NIce to meet you Rodders!

Beer will get you through the times of no money better than money will get you through the times of no beer

Well, I didnt quite expect so many replies, and I thank you all. Any Okells out of a bottle is spot on, but my grudge about them is more to do with the fact that I can buy their draught in Liverpool a damn site cheaper than I can get it here in their own pubs. I work as a fireman (stoker) on the steam trains and I go past Okells twice a day. The hops smell delightful, just like my kitchen on a brew day. At the moment I have just started drinking Youngs harvest bitter. Just finished a bitter, so have an empty keg, but I dont know the name cos I forgot to put the label on. In the bucket, I have Coopers lager on the 1st fermentation. When its done, I will be putting it in the keg and then bottling it immediately. I find this is easier than syphoning it into bottle cos the missus refuses to help me. Then its straight into making an ale. I have 2 5gall kegs and 40x500ml bottles all bought from brewuk.co.uk. Its all kits at the moment because i have only just started. Most are idiot proof and I have only had one flat batch (solved with taking the cap off, boiling the rubber seal to soften it then adding a Co2 capsule.)I have done 3 batches of the nettle beer recipe, but word got out and I gave all but 6 bottles away. You cant beat homebrew.

Why have a 6-pack when you can have a keg?

Hi Rodders! Passing a brewery on the footplate? That sounds like a normal day for me also! After 3 hrs 15 mins of being in the seat between Portsmouth and Cardiff I usually get my high from breathing in the delightful smells from S A Brains at Cardiff. Nice to meet a fellow brewer and railwayman! Any chance Greg could open a homebrew shop on Salisbury station? a drive through would be good for me
    Regards
    Howard

Planning - Golden ale with lots of Styrian hops
    Conditioning - Theakston Old Peculier
Conditioning - Christmas 2010 (Strong Xmas ale)
    Maturing - Peach wine kit
Drinking - Summer Lightning, Summer Wit

    Hi All,

Lurker for a while, but had to reply to Rodders as I have just returned from Holiday - on the Isle of Wight (the Other Isle _not_ Man) and had been on the Steam Train on that Isle.

Anyway just started a 1 Gallon batch of Ginger Beer. Had couple of lagers on the go before. (Yes some of us prefer Lager).

    Anyway - Ho All.
