simonb_13#7 Extract - Cheeky Little Six Pack

1 year ago | simonb_13 (Member)

Was getting withdrawl symptoms waiting for my BIAB stuff to arrive so I did a little six pack with ingredients I had to hand.

Batch Size: 5.00 L

Boil Size: 6.00 L

Estimated OG: 1.037 SG

Estimated Color: 14.2 SRM

Estimated IBU: 25.4 IBU

Brewhouse Efficiency: - %

Boil Time: 30 Minutes

Ingredients:

------------

Amount Item Type % or IBU

0.50 kg Light Dry Extract (8.0 SRM) Dry Extract 83.33 %

0.10 kg Caramel/Crystal Malt -120L (120.0 SRM) Grain 16.67 %

7.00 gm Fuggles [4.50 %] (30 min) Hops 11.7 IBU

7.00 gm Styrian Goldings [5.40 %] (15 min) Hops 9.1 IBU

Just 5 litres wanted and only a 30 minute boil.

It took an hour and three quarters from switching on the gas to pitching the yeast.

Put 1 litre of water in one pan and 5 litres in my stockpot.

Threw the crystal into the 1 litres and switched on the gas. Started heating the 5 litres at the same time.

Switched off the gas under the crystal when it reach 70C and steeped until the 5 litres started to boil. Then tipped the crystal malt through a sieve into the boiling water and added the Fuggles. Added the Styrians and the extract after 15 minutes and then stopped after a further 15 minutes.

In a sink of water with some icepacks until down to 24C and pitched the yeast.

It's now sitting in a 5 litre glass fermenter and frothing up all over the place.

Didn't bother taking the OG. It'll be whatever it'll be.

A very pleasant way to pass a couple of hours of an evening. A bit quick and dirty but it's still beer!

Planning: PJ Clone
Fermenting:
Condtioning: Twibute Clone
Drinking: 100% wheat, Fixby Gold

    Sounds delicious, styrians are great.

I must do some 1 gal's. Under 2 hours for some quality beer and if you get a good recipe you can always scale it up. Just goes to show you dont need masses of time, money and equipment to get into brewing.

    Nice one.

    Conditionin'/Drinkin' - OPA Pale
    Conditionin' - LEB Pale
    Conditionin' - Thwaits Nutty Black
    Plannin' - A user upper!

You wouldn't believe how active this fermentation is. Mount Vesuvius all over again.

Getting so vigorous that I've had to replace the airlock with a tube and a bowl of water.

Down side of brewing on this scale. I want as close to 5 litres as I can get but it doesn't leave much head space for the fermentation. This six pack may end up as a five or four pack at this rate!

    Condtioning: Twibute Clone

I'm a great believer in the small batches too. Until my most recent one (19L) I always did 8L batches. Great way to try out new recipes. Only thing is, if you hit on a recipe you really like, it's all gone before it's had time to condition properly. I also found the time difference between doing an 8L batch and a 19L batch to not be proportional, i.e. it only took about an hour's extra effort to do over twice as much.

If the above didn't make any sense then forgive me; I went out to my local watch the mighty Reds play and accidentally found myself drinking about 10 pints of their rather excellent Guinness.

I've got a note from my mum and everything.

Planning: Marstons Pedigree or London Pride clone
Conditioning (Bottles): Sam Adams Boston Lager Clone
Drinking (Bottles): Sierra Nevada Pale Ale Clone
Drinking (King Keg): McMullen's Country Best Bitter

    Nice .. and very cheeky!

I think that would be my problem ... 8 bottles only from a batch, gone before you know it. But a great use of the bits you had hanging around! Looks like a nice recipe too!

Beer will get you through the times of no money better than money will get you through the times of no beer
