2010 wheat price
Heard on the radio this morning that the wheat price has risen almost 50% in the last month due to severe drought in Russia. Russian & Baltic states wheat exports are forecast to be 33% - 45% down this year.
In my experience higher prices usually brings more to the market from alternative sources & the price rises are never as high as feared or expected, depending on which side of the fence you sit.
But this is bound to have a knock on effect on the price of feed barley & ultimately malting barley. Pig & poultry producers for example will source cheaper barley & reduce the amount of wheat in the ration.
Although most malting barley is produced under contract I would still expect price rises.

Warminster maltings are due to review their prices on the 1/10/10 when the barley harvest is secure. They were expecting to actually lower the prices this year but have informed me that with the steady increase in wheat prices over the past few weeks the jury is still out but hopefully at worst the prices will remain the same.
I'll let you know once the review is done in October.

Good to know prices might fall in the short term, could be some interesting contract negotiations for the next crop.
