Nice one hamish very helpful.

I dont see it as hassle hust be nice to see what you can do like with all brewing.
Be nice to have a beer low in % for summer etc that can be consume more without getting smashed after a few.I dont drink any of my beer for the % only for the taste if i can drink alot more of something that tastes great then why not .

Drinking bud seamus lol id rather have a glass of water more flavour.

You could get bags of hop flavour in a low alcohol beer, all you need to do is add lots of hops towards the end of the boil, post boil and dry hops too. Frankly any hop would do, though something like Nelson Sauvin could be a bit over powering and make the beer harsh with resin like flavours. Don't be frightened though, experiment, my best brew is 4.3% and has 145 grams of post boil hops.

Malt flavours could be more difficult, especially in an extract brew but you could steep unusual malts like carahell and aromatic malt as well as the usual crystal, chocolate and roasted barley, maybe even some of the caramel and crystal wheat malts.

Porridge oats would improve the body in a full mash beer.

Go for a yeast with low attenuation so that it will leave some residual sweetness and body.

Why would anyone want to go through the hassle? It's like making a 'low bacon', bacon sandwich. Make it as a normal bacon sandwich then ... take out some of the bacon??? Duh???

Just brew normal beer and drink less of it... or dilute it with lemonade and drink ale shandy... or drink Bud.

Confused... <img src="http://www.brewuk.co.uk/forum/bb-plugins/default/icon_confused.gif" title=":?" class="bb_smilies" />

Found this : http://www.tastingbeers.com/school/beer_production/12008861.html

Which is an interesting read, and i would guess these beers discuss were brewed using the limited fermentation method which would explain the bland taste compared to a normally brewed beer.

I remember reading somewhere regarding removing alcohol using the ice cream machine basically distillation in reverse as alcohol has a lower boiling temp than water the same is to say at the other end of the scale and beer freezes below waters normal freezing temp

Its a bit of faffing around but maybe worth a try for a small batch and would apply to any brewed beer

Just cracked open the last bottle of low alcohol Tolly english ale which has a much more hoppy note, still a bit too bitter maybe adding a bit of lemonade like a lager top would finish it off nice ?

As stated on the bottle with tropical note, which made me think if we were to create a Recipe for a low alcohol big flavour we need some strong hop flavour like nelson sauvin ?

Beerlover , 3% sounds like a good mark maybe 3.5 highest

Putting my brew boiler together at the mo but hoping to get a couple of brews going at month end so wouldnt mind trying something like this along with saracens green king ipa recipe

I have some nelson sauvin and galaxy hops in the freezer and some crystal malt, will play around with beer engine tonight n see what i can come up with

Could you have something as low as 3% and still taste like a great beer id like it to be hoppy like a proper job or something like the way to amarillo?

Thanks beerlover

I have to admit i do hate the fact all tesco's seem to have a different selection of ales and i prefer my local morrissons for there ale selection but i use tescos as its the only place local i can get woodpecker cider for the other half and they sell my two fav ales belhavens twisted thistle and punk ipa

Proper job n the st austells are both lovely beers you should enjoy them

Thanks for all the input guys, thats interesting about the tax ( bloody goverment )

Never got round to putting uo the tasting notes and had a busy weekend thus far

But price wise i can confirm they were all between 1.95 and 2.09 which is the same as all there other ales so either the brewerys are making a better profit or more than likely tesco's are getting the extra pennies.

Ive tried the martons ale shandy and the mighty atom however havnt got round to trying the tolly english ale yet

The mighty atom was kinda flat poured with a little head and dissipated quite quick, didnt get near as much of a hoppy smell off of it (but then im too used to drinking big hoppy ipa's ) and i was quite dissapointed in the taste quite bitter but without the hoppy after taste since they boast on the back at using five different hop varieties for a big flavour was definitely a disappointment

It reminded me to caliber the non alcoholic larger.

Think if it had a better balance between malt and hop to make it sweeter would have made this a better beer, however if i ever see this on draft in a pub i will try another pint for comparison.

The marstons ale shandy was a real refreshing pint with a dark golden colour a typical hoppy smell you'd expect from an ale and the right amount of lemonade to compliment it, which did make me think maybe the lemonade was what was missing from the mighty atom

The ale shandy just tasted like well an ale shandy <img src="http://www.brewuk.co.uk/forum/bb-plugins/default/icon_wink.gif" title=";)" class="bb_smilies" />
I will definitely be getting a couple more of the ale shandys and maybe save them for the summer bbq

All in all i will not be replacing my nice 5odd% ale's for low alcohol beers as was disappointed with the lack of flavour.

Please excuse my amateur review as im all too used to just drinking and making this.

Heres a thought, if we could all improve on these by making a low alcohol and true big flavour ale ??

That's quite interesting. I hate how the government words stuff. USA laws etc. are especially ambiguous from what I've read - meaning the LEOs can bend them to suit what they want to do.

There's also a higher tax bracket, which is for beers over 7.5%
In typical 'Government Speak', of the type they use when they don't want anyone to understand it, the figures below are for; "Rate £ per hectolitre per cent of alcohol in the beer." All clear on that?

Beer - General Beer Duty - 18.57
Beer - High Strength: Exceeding 7.5%abv - 23.21
Beer - Lower Strength: Exceeding 1.2% - not exceeding 2.8% abv - 9.29

Up until 1st October 2011 there was no additional tax on strong beer, and no tax at all on weak beer.
Sort of a PAYD system. Pay As You Drink.

Hi guys,

Been away from the brewing scene for a while but feel this a better time than any to get back in

Was in tesco this evening for my weekly beer shop ( sod the food that can wait) and saw these new low alcohol ales

Which intrigued me to whether you can still have the big ale flavour and low alcohol these are 2.8% ( can any one answer why there all only 2.8 or is this just coincidence?)

Haven't tried them yet just stuck em in fridge for a wee chillin and will update later on taste

I was in Tesco in Newmarket today looking, in vain, for some Proper Job. It's a small Tesco but they had Hopping Hare and 2 or 3 other Badger beers on the shelves, so if a small store has it, it must be a general stock item. Is Spring here?

saracen - that sounds like it could be a good recipe, yes. I think I'll try it sometime!

Greg - I think Hopping Hare is seasonal, but I've seen it constantly on the shelves in bottles for well over a year now! Not a bad thing <img src="http://www.brewuk.co.uk/forum/bb-plugins/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" /> I agree with Firkin Fox, tasty stuff. hahaha I know what you mean about those goblet glasses though haha

Hi Barracuda.
I think this is a complete non-starter from an extract point of view. It says it's a product of 6 different malts, and I can't even FIND 6 relevant malts. To be honest, I can't see any reason at all to include 6 malts and the chances of all the individual flavours coming through are nil. Also, whichever way you go about it, it comes out the colour of Creosote!

The 3 examples of malt profiles above are from American sources. The first is from an American forum, the other two from Hopville.

Your right though, as with any 'cooking', you can use slightly different ingredients and still end up in the same ball park regarding flavour and aroma profiles. (I like to compare a brew boil to making a very technical soup. I'm fairly capable in the kitchen, and thinking like that gets me in the right head space to more clearly understand brewing).

On that same principle, i'd personally be happy to get brewing once i've found a recipe thats going to reach that 'ballpark' rather than fretting about every subtle nuance of an exact clone. I want to brew things that are close to my favorite tipples for sure, but it's one of the joys of homebrew to be able to also create something unique.

Read somewhere that the Tess one (book above) was not quite right. Look at some american forums, and hopville has a recipe too.

I want to do a Sierra Nevada Porter but all the recipes do not seem to be the same as what Sierra Nevada say. That said, sometimes a recipe will give an almost exact flavour using slightly different ingredients. Do I keep the choc and black malts I bought for another day and do a Summer Lightning clone, or just go for it? Decisions decisions!

I've been sitting here browsing and playing with Beer Engine to try an extract version of the Brooklyn Brown, but the necessity of Mash-required malts seems to be a sticking point;
(The Aromatic Belgian, and Biscuit Malt (That appears in a number of attempted clones online).
Also, getting an EBU in line with A Brown Ale like Brooklyn seems a struggle when using so many crystal/roasted malts (It's coming out too dark on Beer Engine)

Here are some resources that I found useful:

This synopsis appears in a number of places, so may originate from the brewery:

Brooklyn Brown Ale, made exclusively with American ingredients, won Bronze medals at the Great American Beer Festival in the Strong Ale Category in 1991 and in the American Brown Ale Category in 1992. Brooklyn Brown uses pale, crystal, chocolate, and black malts to attain a complex creamy texture. It is more heavily hopped than its British forbears.

HERE is an Article on Brown Ales, American specs at the very end.

Here are a number of recipes (The malt profiles) I found claiming to be Brooklyn Brown clones. However, the ABV and colour doesn't seem to match up on their own recipe pages (compared to the Brooklyn site)

Hop profiles tend to be pretty much the same as Saracen's suggestion, with a lot of people using Northern Brewer instead of the Fuggles.

Example 1:

76.9% 6.25 lbs. Light Dry Malt Extract
9.2% 0.75 lbs. Crystal 60L
3.9% 0.31 lbs. Chocolate Malt
2.3% 0.19 lbs. Biscuit Malt
6.2% 0.50 lbs. Wheat Malt
1.5% 0.13 lbs. Cara-Pils

Example 2:

77%	6lb Light Dry Malt Extract
9%	12oz Crystal 60L
6%	8oz White Wheat Malt
4%	5oz Chocolate Malt
2%	3oz Biscuit Malt
2%	2oz Cara-Pils/Dextrine

Example 3:

76% 6lb X-Light Dry Malt Extract
10% 12oz Crystal 60L
6%	8oz Wheat Dry Extract
4%	5oz Chocolate Malt (US)
2%	3oz Victory Malt
2%	2oz Malto-Dextrin

This one is published in THIS book:

12 oz. crystal 60L malt
5 oz. chocolate malt
3 oz. biscuit malt

6.25 lb. Muntons extra light DME
8 oz. Muntons wheat DME
2 oz. malto dextrin

1 oz. Northern Brewer, 8.6 alpha (60 minutes)
0.25 oz. Cascade (15 minutes)
0.25 oz. Willamette (15 minutes)
0.25 oz. Willamette (2 minutes)
0.5 oz. Cascade (2 minutes)

1 tsp. Irish moss (15 minutes)

Wyeast 1968 (first choice)
Wyeast 1338 (second choice)
Ferment at 68 F

O.G. 1.060-1.061
F.G. 1.015
32 IBU
43 SRM
5.7% ABV

Note: this recipe is for a partial-wort boil. If you boil the full wort volume reduce the bittering hops accordingly (I'd suggest 0.75 oz.).

I also have something about Poacher.
An experienced brewer friend of mine reckons if you make a Wherry kit, add 2 kg of Plums, cut up and de-stoned, with 25 gms of Liquorice (he used Pontefract cakes) you get a passable clone of Poacher. If you know the beer, what do you think?

I'm with Als Pals totally. Don't really like Badger beers, only ever had them in bottles so that may be why, for some reason beers with novelty names or odd additions put me off. There was one though that had a hint of ginger which was okay (but wouldn't have it again).
The same with Shepherd Neame, Morland, Wychwood, Wadworths and Ringwood, dunno why, can't explain, but at least it's out in the open now and I can shut that closet door.... phew.

Agree re Poacher. Lovely Sunday beer - great with a roast.

Hopping hare is sometimes found in bottles but I think its a seasonal beer. I've usually drunk it down the local which is a Hall and Woodhouse pub. Firkin Fox is pretty nice too except they serve it the most girly goblet style glasses which gets on my nerves.

Hi,

I'm a big fan of this, they have it on offer at a bar i go to at the mo for 2.50 euros a pop.

Meantime American Brown is fairly similer and may be easier to get your hands on as they are London based, although it is a seasonal I think.

Rogue are my favorite American brewery at the moment, make some absolute crackers.

Sounds good. I may have to order a mixed case from them when I have spare cash (although, no cash is 'spare' these days it seems)

I have tried Goose Island IPA, in the same bar as the Brooklyn Brown, however, It was towards the end of a long drinking night, and my recollection of it is hazy. I must try again, when my taste buds are fresh.

I also really wanted to drink an Anchor Liberty Ale (but they were out of stock), as it's a single hop American Amber, which is what I plan to brew soon.

I think my Hopping Hare was an extract recipe. It needs some new AA values but I'll sort it over the next few days if you like.

Glad you're enjoying them, Barracuda!

Greg summed up my stance pretty much exactly. I used to drink a lot of Tanglefoot when I was younger...

Hopping Hare is indeed lovely, and I also like their seasonal Pickled Partridge (I think there's more too).

Poachers Choice is a very, very tasty beer, flavoured with Damsons if I remember correctly. Try it out! I've not met anyone who's tried it and not loved it.

Greg, you may be right about the Golden Glory's longevity. I did only have a single bottle of that. My opinion may be different if I spent a while evening on the same type. But the one I had certainly went down very nicely.

I always seem to struggle when trying to figure out which style of beer I prefer. If I made a list of Ales I've really enjoyed recently, they'd be all over the taste spectrum. This both good and bad, as any shop or pub is likely to have something I enjoy, but on the other hand, I often can't choose. This choice becomes even more challenging when deciding what to brew for myself.

I'll put Hopping Hare on the to buy list. I don't think it was included in the offers as Sainsbury or Asda, but thats not really an issue.

Tangle Foot is the only one I remembered having previously, on tap I think. So I knew I was going to enjoy that.

Badger beers are lovely. Look out for Hopping Hare which is really nice.

I think the colour comes from a combination of crystal and choc malt as they aren't overly sweet.

Interesting in your fav choice as these are probably my least fav as find them a bit sickly. One is okay now and again. Much prefer Tangle Foot, Fursty Ferret and First Gold. Tanglefoot is also really nice in cans and often on special offer.

I've been working my way through the different Badger Ales (Dorset) this week, mainly because they seem to be on special at more than one supermarket.

Also they have gone through a recent rebrand, so the bottles are very noticeable on the shelf, so in the basket they go. (I'm obviously weak to advertising this week).

Golden Glory is my favorite, a really fruity, peachy brew. Easy to get a few down. A friend of mine wished me condolences for drinking a beer that tastes like a soft fruit, but each to their own.. heh

Golden Champion was more floral than fruit, and also tasty and drinkable.

The other 3 I tried were Tangle Foot, Fursty Ferret and First Gold. These all were varying shades of amber, and had some sweetness in them (Is this Crystal Malt at work?) All of these also had slightly spiced and orange flavour, with the Tangle Foot maybe being a bit 'crisper' on the palate.

Badger seem to be very adept at making Ales that are easy to drink.

I'm sure most if not all of you know these Ales, as they are a big name brand, but I though I would share my views regardless, as it's been a while since I drank anything from this brewery.

I've been drinking Brooklyn Brown Ale at a bar near me, and I love the stuff!

It's got that toffee style aroma, with taste of coffee and chocolate, without being heavy and cloying. Hop aroma is very low. It's lightly carbonated and slightly 'lip smacking' which makes it very drinkable and refreshing despite being a dark ale.

It's not cheap however, I seem to recall paying over £4, but I know the bar goes to great lengths to source it this far down the UK, so thats fine by me. It's also 5.6%, so you don't want too many of em. (Or maybe you do..)

When I get round to brewing a Brown Beer, if I get anything close to this, I'll be overjoyed.

I too had an M&S Cornish a week or so back and thought it was "proper" nice. But Properjob still has the edge! More malt in the Cornish, still with the obligitory whack of hops tho.

I am waiting for the brewuk proper job expert to give his opinion, he has gone unusually quiet.
Probably making up a devious plot for episode 4 <img src="http://www.brewuk.co.uk/forum/bb-plugins/default/icon_question.gif" title=":?:" class="bb_smilies" /> <img src="http://www.brewuk.co.uk/forum/bb-plugins/default/icon_twisted.gif" title="" class="bb_smilies" />

Well the results are in and they are......
Both S#*t Hot!...
the Original 'Proper job' is a lovely bottle of beer, as anyone who's tried it will tell you.
The thing is getting hold of it, i live in lancashire and its hard to get hold of.(i had to buy it directly from St Austell brewery shop @ £20.75 for 12 bottles plus £10.00 delivery)though it is worth it...
Now on to the 'M&S Cornish ipa'..Although the APV is down to 5% from (5.5% Proper Job)it is very good...
Similar in many ways....Now you would think that St Austell would make sure that their own AWARD WINNING PROPER JOB was superior to the 'Cornish ipa' that they make for M&S,...but in my opinion i don't think they have, they've given M&S a Very Good Ipa...in fact i think it is slightly BETTER!...don't get me wrong they are both Excellent! but i do favour the M&S one..it is £2.29 a bottle at M&s (or 6 for 5..they have a range of beers done for them; irish stouts, meantime porter, burton's have done one, theres a few regional brews to try..)
CONCLUSION: i urge anybody who likes 'Proper Job' to grab 1 bottle from M&S and try it yourself...(would love to hear what you think? you might prefer the proper job original....but you WON'T dislike the M&S cornish ipa.....Honestly..(No i Don't Work for M&S.!)...........
got loads of shares tho!....LOL....

Hi,

My highlights of the year in no particular order;

Tryst Blathan - really really enjoyed this one, very easy to drink.

Great Divide Yeti Espresso Stout - fantastic but my god you cant drink much of it.

Pretty much anything by Mikkeller I've been able to get my hands on, LA Lager, Dim Sum and the American Dream get the nod as standouts and ultimately are the kind of carry on I want to be knocking out myself.

There is a place in the centre of Barcelona that has recently opened that has a load of well looked after Rogue Ales on draft and I have not had anything bad by them. Also about the only place you can get a decent pint round these parts.

Got my hands on my first bottle of Thornbridge Kipling as part of my Christmas booze run and highly recommend that to anyone who hasn't had the pleasure.

Cheers,

Zegs.

The Weihenstephaner is what you would call complex, spicy, almost clove like and peppery but banana notes too. You'll be surprised just how good the Lowenbrau is, the Hacker is good too and that has the advantage of coming in flip tops. <img src="http://www.brewuk.co.uk/forum/bb-plugins/default/icon_biggrin.gif" title=":D" class="bb_smilies" />

Kapuziner make a good wheat beer and it comes in flip top bottles too. If you're into wheat beers try Weihenstephaner and Kloster Andechs, I think those two are amongst the best you can buy.

Funny thing about beer is:-

If your on holiday and try the local stuff, well, its flippin amazin', dont matter where you are! I went to Barcelona a year ago for a short break (insert 7 year belated honeymoon here) and found that, though it was lager and not a really tasty one at that it was lush. I'd love to re-create it here, but without the sun, free living (insert no kids here) and frosted ice litre mugs, its never gonna be the same!

As far as im concerned every beer I get around the xmas period is gold!

Hmmm, good question!
Some of the best ones that spring to mind:

St. Austell Proper Job - first time I'd found it in a bottle.
Exmoor Gold - I really enjoyed this one, first time I'd tried it this year.
Hook Norton Double Stout - I really enjoy this one!
I also worked my way through Tesco's selection of Skinners beers and enjoyed them all, Cornish Knocker probably being my favourite (although I haven't sampled any for a while so hard to remember...)

I moved from kit to extract brewing this year, and am looking forward to getting my all grain set up going in the new year <img src="http://www.brewuk.co.uk/forum/bb-plugins/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" />

SpeyBrew - You're in Inverness? I played there on tour a few years ago. Sure is a long way up!

I wish! My nearest quality off licence is 1hr and half drive away - the excellent Deeside Drinks emporium, well worth checking out if anyone is ever visiting Banchory/royal deeside.

Rest of the time I stock up when in Glasgow or Edinburgh as there is nothing like that in Inverness for now though the "big tesco" has a fairly decent selection.

Haven't come across any thronbridge stuff - will have to check it out.

Impressive selection indeed!.

I know I've criticised them in the past but my local had Thornbridge Kipling on tap a couple of weeks ago and it was one of the best beers I've ever had.

How a brewery capable of brewing beers as amazing as Kipling and Jaipur can produce (I hesitate to use the word brew) a beer as monumentally bad as Wild Swan I'll never understand.

As far as my own beers go, Wheat Stout and Simcoe Motueka pale ale have been the stand out brews.

That's an impressive selection, you must have a good off license. The variety round here doesn't change that much so its been a pretty dull year of drinking the usual suspects and most of the unusual beers I've found either at beer festivals, pubs or bottles have been pretty unmemorable to be honest. There are a lot of average beers about these days.

On the plus side I've been brewing some cracking beers at home after a shaky start on the new setup. Best so far has been the latest pale Ale, 4.5 % with Challenger for bittering and Celia for Aroma, WLP005 yeast. Cracking, easy drinker with a lovely subtle citrus aroma. Not brewed for about 6 weeks as I've been too busy so really looking forward to getting some brews underway in the Jan.

Whats been everyone's favorite beers of 2011 either shop/pub bought or made yourself?

Best beers I had for first time:

Brewdog - My name is Ingrid
Fantastic beer bit like their hardcore ipa but not as heavy going. Designed by Swedish beer bloggers. Made with Swedish cloud berries. Good video of it being made

Black Isle - Goldeneye pale ale
Have loved their Red Kite for ages and one of the beers that got me into good beer but only recently came across their Goldeneye. Very drinkable.

Craig Allan - Agent Provactuer
Came across this in France from the awesome beer shop/cafe brewberry.fr. Made by a Scottish guy that's set up in France. Have never seen it here which is a shame.

Stone - Ruination
Had this in the brewdog bar in Glasgow. Probably the hoppiest beer I've had - certainly wouldn't be to everyone's taste but I loved it.

Speybrew - Mendocino Pale Ale
My Amarillo IPA - had to get a mention maybe not as good as the ones above but certainly better than a lot of shop/pub bought beers. Absolutely love cracking one open and pouring it out. "I made this" <img src="http://www.brewuk.co.uk/forum/bb-plugins/default/icon_biggrin.gif" title=":D" class="bb_smilies" />

Staples that were never far away from my beer shelf this year:

Goose Island - Honkers Ale, Brooklyn - Lager, Brewdog - 5am Saint, Punk and the odd Riptide, Flying Dog, The odd kernel that I could find, Black Isle - Red Kite and some of their others, Estrella - Damm.

Tomos Watkins bottles are the same - front and neck labels come off easily, leaving no residue, while the back label takes a good soak in hot water and the back of a knife to remove. There is little difference in the labels - all the plastic type - except that the front and neck lables have transparent sections while the back one is a solid black panel. Curious.

I have access to as many Magniers Cider bottles as I want from my local and they have been fine for me as they are an almost exact match to the 100 or so 'proper' home brewing bottles I was given a couple of years ago.

A couple of minutes soak in a sink of hand hot water is almost always enough. Then a quick rub over with a kitchen scotchbright/sponge pad and Bob's yer proverbial. If one gets obstinate it goes in the recycling. I can easily strip a crateful (20) or more in about half an hour. The worst bit is often the gold foil around the neck <img src="http://www.brewuk.co.uk/forum/bb-plugins/default/icon_cool.gif" title="8)" class="bb_smilies" />

Fullers bottles are the best homebrew wbottle by bar thick glass and labels a doddle.

I find really hot water or cold water and soak them overnight but somethimes less time front and backs tend to come off quite easy.

For others i get as much label off as possible and best thing to remove residue is wd40 i swear by it .Then a nice rince in hot soapy water to get rid of any traces of wd40 then your set.

I've found that acetone is needed to remove some beer labels - esp the residue left by them. Nail varnish remover is acetone and works pretty well. That and a scourer or wirewool helps. I also soak them in boiling water to start with.
Has something to do with solubility of the glue used - water dissolves some of it whereas hot water only melts/softens the glue on some bottles. I also use a bright lamp so I can see any residue on the bottles.
It's quite a mission with some bottles!! (i find German beer bottles are best - labels just lift straight off!)
A local bar said it's okay for me to go through their bottle bins- great for bottles but I feel like a tramp...!

Funny you should say that, the last thing they did before going to bed (at 8 by the way) was to throw a couple of logs (and a tiny bit of irish turf) on the fire.
Kids love simple things like that and it took their minds of Spurs losing.

My two even weigh out the hops for me (they do get double-checked of course) although they disappear with the missus for the boil up as the smell is 'apparently' disgusting, dunno what they mean.
Both labels are only paper but the glue either side must be different, it's not as though the back label is the same for each of their ales, they're all different.
Still, it's 10:30pm now, I must get the boys to bed soon, been at it for a couple of hours, they can start again after school tomorrow.

Dunno... maybe the paper or ink used on the back labels is less permeable so they don't soak off quite so easily (A different print run?). Sometimes I get the odd batch of Magniers bottles that have quite stubborn labels whereas normally they slide right off after a couple of mins in hot water.

Good for you though.. wish I had a great little helper come bottlin' time! <img src="http://www.brewuk.co.uk/forum/bb-plugins/default/icon_mrgreen.gif" title="" class="bb_smilies" />

This sounds so sad but.
It very much depends on the type of label - I would anticipate that they are not the same on the Fullers bottle (though I've never even seen a Fullers bottle so who knows). I expect that the back label is either metallic or glued, while the others are self=adhesive.

seamus - Yeah I like those, and the rest, but really love the Black Pearl! Do you usually drink Stout? I've had it before where I have an amazing beer, try it again a few months later and it's totally different! Dissapointing haha
I'll try and check out the Ales of Scilly and the others. I've tried a lot of the Skinners beers too, really like the Cornish Knocker, the others are very nice too <img src="http://www.brewuk.co.uk/forum/bb-plugins/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" />

Greg - Ahh yeah, that's the one! Tasted ok, not a whole lot to it although it was still quite nice. You should all definitely try the Winter Lightning!

I came across John Barleycorn Bitter (I think) by Hopback too a few months ago. I remember that being my first time trying or seeing it, but as I was already pretty drunk I can't remember how it tasted.

I went to the Wyndham the other night as my friend was working behind the bar. As soon as I walked in he started pulling me a pint of this stuff, saying, 'I'm not even going to ask what you want, you'rehaving one of these.' I'd never come across it before but really enjoyed it, bit stronger than Summer Lightning, bit darker as I recall, and very tasty. Proper Winter beer! I also sampled another Hopback beer I hadn't tried before while there, can't remember the name but it sounded Greek. Was a weak beer as well, under 3% I think.

Anyone else tried the Winter?

I believe that, traditionally, beer was paired with cheese way before wine was. There are restaurants out there which will give you a beer recommendation menu with your food, niot so many in the UK but more in the US and other European countries like Belgium. I have been reading about it in one of Pete Browns books, the second one I think, good reads, quite funny.

I was given a "cooking with beer" book ( ISBN 0-7835-4832-X ) which also has a section on matching beers to foods.

I love trying to match beers with foods, but my pallet aint that advanced and to me theres a lot of beers that go with the majority of foods <img src="http://www.brewuk.co.uk/forum/bb-plugins/default/icon_razz.gif" title=":P" class="bb_smilies" />

Wine does it so why not beer.

Wifee did spagbol and garlic bread tonight. I will recommend Ringwood 49'er to go with it, the garlic seems to really bring out the flavour of the beer.

Pedigree, I find goes well with steak & chips, also funny enough I tried it with a lump of cheddar, as I saw or was told it was good, but OMG, a totally different taste of bitter, kinda mellowed it, and made it somehow 'smoother' which did work very well - sod the red wine and cheese now <img src="http://www.brewuk.co.uk/forum/bb-plugins/default/icon_razz.gif" title=":P" class="bb_smilies" />

Sawbridgeworth IPA is very nice by it's self, but went with sticky chicken and salad kebab so well I forgot how much I'd drunk......

Of course these are my ideas, I'm sure some will think I'm mad, so what do others think, or suggest to try beer / food pairings with commercial beers.

Homebrew goes well with everything lol <img src="http://www.brewuk.co.uk/forum/bb-plugins/default/icon_cool.gif" title="8)" class="bb_smilies" />

I've said it before, and no doubt I'll say it again, but there are far too many breweries out there. I don't buy bottled, but I often check out the shelves. I've never heard of 75% of Asda's current range. There's a limit to how many worthwhile variations there are on a theme. If you go with the guidelines to design a type of beer, given commercial cost restraints, how many permutation can there be? Ok, thousands, but when you realise there are 400 breweries in East Anglia alone, all producing probably 5 beers, that's 2,000 recipes in just this area.

I'm so often disappointed with bottled ales (too fizzy, nothing like the pump equivalent), one of the main reasons I got into brewing.
And talking of the ingredients additions, I was recently disappointed by one of my previous favourite ales, Directors. I noted the bottle (or can, can't remember now) had a sugar listed in the ingredients, and boy could you taste it..! Yuk.

Stopping at a Hungry Horse, my friend declared, "Ooh! A special from Greene King!" He isn't the world's greatest beer buff. I tried a little and here's my go at a review.

Once again, Greene King have produced a dodgy pump label to go with this attempt at beer. Ghastly Ghoul, served as a keg, is dark. Looks like it might be a Mild, but with an ABV of 4.2% it seems a bit high. Initial tasting gave the impression someone had given me a glass of black water, lightly (VERY lightly) flavoured with something burnt. Probably toast. The aroma..... sorry..... rephrase that. There is no aroma and this feature carries right through the beer, with no taste apart from the burnt toast and no aftertaste at all. All in all, a rather silly way to spend a lot of money. There's more flavour in the Lemonade that comes out of the multi-function hair-rinse tap behind the bar.

The reviews I've read elsewhere all suggest that the IPA ANR is a cloudy one, some reviews are of it from a keg at the brewery and even they say it poured a cloudy orangey colour..

Granted I could've let it settle for a few days before opening it but I just couldn't resist opening it! <img src="http://www.brewuk.co.uk/forum/bb-plugins/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":-)" class="bb_smilies" />

I think the bottles were £2.80 each, which isn't cheap as they're right from the brewery but still better than £3.50!

Kernal beers are bottle conditioned. The one's I had were clear with sediment at the bottom of the bottle. I poured it like I would one of my own leaving the last squirt behind.

Jim, I think it was your driving home like a maniac whilst dreaming of cracking open a beer that caused the cloudyness? <img src="http://www.brewuk.co.uk/forum/bb-plugins/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":-)" class="bb_smilies" />

How much did you pay? The one's I bought from the deli were about £3.50 if I remember right, which isn't a price that would make buy them again as lovely as they were, but I felt I had to try them.

Yes they are bottle conditioned and I must admit there was a lot of sediment in the bottles

I did take them home in the boot of the car and probably could've let them settle a bit more but I've seen reviews elsewhere and they say it's a cloudy beer so it's either meant to be like that (doubt it for IPA) or they're not doing something right.. Still a tasty beer though!

Made it to the kernel brewery today and bought a few bottles (they only take cash so i had to limit myself!)
I bought the following:
IPA ANR (Amarillo, Nelson & Riwaka??) - beautiful fruity smell and taste, a cloudy beer but one of my favourite beers of the year and as its november that's pretty high praise! 330ml bottle so a small drink but apparently 7% so it's small but mighty
Pale ale (citra & Amarillo) another cloudy one but again full of fruity hop smell & flavour, a nice hoppy beer! 500ml so a good sized ale
IPA black 330ml 7% but not yet tried
Export India porter 500ml 5.5% not yet tried either

I've got to get a new boiler because I'm sure I can knock out something very similar to those pales..

Ya see homebrew has enlightened your beery senses! A lot of beer formulation and processes changes over time due to lots of factors - money, trend, availability of products etc etc. and you will find that what was nice 10 years ago is well..... a bit crap now! Plus your tastes change as you carry on living so that could be another thing <img src="http://www.brewuk.co.uk/forum/bb-plugins/default/icon_wink.gif" title="" class="bb_smilies" />

On holiday and feel devastated the only 'bitter' was tetley. Staying at a premier inn had the mis-fortune of thinking this beer would be nice <img src="http://www.brewuk.co.uk/forum/bb-plugins/default/icon_surprised.gif" title=":o" class="bb_smilies" />

Last time I had it was 14+ years ago, tastes changed.
Smelt like a sweaty sock and tasted bland......even my unconditioned kit home brew has better depth of bitter and hoppyness.

do they put some sort of chemical in it to keep that creamy head all the way down the glass??

Hi Bacchus. Nice to meet you.
Ambitious, I'd say. I'm not sure about the triple fermenting and triple hopping. Good luck and can't wait to hear how it turns out.
They are quite forthcoming about Oxford Gold, giving a list of ingredients on their website. On the other hand, the hops they list for Brakspear Bitter are completely different to the ones suggested by Graham Wheeler, and I've heard it said his recipe is a fairly close clone.

Wyeast 1275 or WhiteLabs WLP023 has been suggested as the Brakspear Bitter yeast. Can't see them using more than one.

I like this beer! Pretty savage, around 7% as I recall...
Would be great to brew a clone. I seem to remember reading that Brakspear are one of the breweries who are quite secretive about their yeast, so would be hard to make an exact replica. I love Oxford Gold as well, really nice pint <img src="http://www.brewuk.co.uk/forum/bb-plugins/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" />

I see from the site the cask is 4.1% ABV and the bottled is 4.7% ABV.
It can only be to do with cost and the general decline in drinking strong beer. Like it or not, the various anti-drinking campaigns have had an effect.

Weird, it shouldnt taste any different only a month out of date, even big breweries must have a few "dud" bottles out every now and again I suppose.

Been drinking a lot of this lately (mostly because we had a lot of it that was past it's BBE date) used to quite like it, nice rich, dark, tasty pint. But the odd bottle tastes like wet dog, is it just because it's a month out of date? I can't believe that's the case.
I also noticed that the stuff that's in date is a lower ABV - 4.7 rather than 5.2 (so the dark one is the same ABV as the Bombardier Burning Gold - that never goes out of date - sells like hot cakes!). Don't know what the weaker stuff tastes like yet. Has anyone else noticed this gear change?

Not tried the chemical (WD40) approach. I take off the plastic and then leave them in hot water for a bit. The glue becomes more visible and can be scraped off with the back of a knife. If I'm lucky (and naughty) I leave them in water overnight and when I turn up at work one of my minions has delt with them for me!!! They seem to use different glue on the back and front - the front is never a problem - the sticky stays on the label.

I offered the Tomos Watkins MD one of my beers once, he politely declined! It was a chilli beer and he doesn't like chilli beer. I'd rather him say no than take one and not drink it. I've not made anything I've been sufficiently proud of to offer him since, other than more chilli beer. I'm as in to chillis almost as much as I'm in to beer.
