    My first ever brew!
    Review by Peteon 02/06/2014
This was my first ever attempt at home brew and I'm just hoping that they all work out as well as this!

As a noob I made lots of mistakes ( added the malt too quickly which resulted in clumping and forgot I'd need a syphon to transfer the beer into the bottling bucket which meant I lost a lot of my beer!! ) but the end result was brilliant. I'd be very happy if I'd bought it from the shop and would happily recommend.

Followed the recipe, used the cheaper of the yeasts and made a boiled water/sugar solution which I put into the bottling bucket first as a primer.

Think I'll try the Amarillo next. Tips?

Almost the same as the real thing
    Review by Danon 25/05/2014
I bought this recipe pack as a first step towards more sophisticated home brewing as I'd previously used canned kits (cans of hopped malt extract).

As I was already familiar with Old Speckled Hen, I thought it would be worth a try to see how it compares to the real thing. With a few family members volunteering for a blind taste test, they had a hard time telling the difference between the two. Mission accomplished!

It took longer than stated in the recipe to fully clear (I think I had mine in the bottle for around a month) but that might be because I mixed in additional priming sugar before bottling, kicked up a little too much sediment.

The instructions provided with the recipe pack were easy enough to follow, even for a beginner.

One thing I will say to anyone switching from canned kits is that it's worth it just for the smell of hops during the boil!

    Better than the original
    Review by ASDon 25/02/2014
Brewed a couple of these as my first intro to partial extract.

The flavors and complexity aged really well after a few months, I can barely drink anything shop bought now.

Back to back the brew has more flavor and caramel than a tin of the original thought my brother in law finds it a little too rich.

Ordered a couple more along with some others. One is fermenting now as I enjoy the last of the second batch.

Buy a nylon straining bag to boil the grains in, makes it so much easier to just lift out if you're using a large pan in place of a dedicated vessel.
After steeping, I soak and drain this a bag few times in a couple of litres of cold water with a little spoon agitation to get the maximum sugar / flavor out before using this as the makeup volume at the end of the brew.

Kit comes reusable with a muslin hop bag which works fine.

Great product ... takes about 3hrs to brew on a standard stove.

Great Pint. Probable the best I've brewed
    Review by Nimdaon 26/04/2013
Brewed this as I love the commercial Old speckled hen. If I had bolted this in old speckled hen bottles you would not be able to tell it from the original. As for taste its not exactly the same as the commercial beer but not far off, and I can add possible batter.

I left it 2 weeks in the fermenter, 2 weeks warm conditioning, and 4 weeks cold conditioning and its by far the best I've brewed.

So good I've now got another in the fermenter, and looking forward to it maturing

    Fantastic
    Review by Spenceron 13/03/2013
I have made the kit twice now, and have just ordered my third kit. It is perfect. It is very close to Old Speckled Hen but, as others have pointed out, is actually better. It is smoother and has a slightly sweeter flavour.

The first batch I made went straight from the fermentation barrel (after 14 days) to the bottle and was then left for another 2 weeks. It tasted good 2 weeks after bottling, but it was a little flat. After leaving it for another 2 weeks it tasted fantastic, although it was still a little flat.

With the second batch, I followed all of the instructions again, but instead of bottling the beer from the fermenting barrel, I moved it to a secondary barrel to remove the sediment. That left me with about 15 litres of beer, to which I added a sugar solution (100g sugar dissolved in 190ml boiling water which was then left to cool). I left it for a couple of hours, and then bottled as normal. After 4 weeks the beer tastes as fantastic as it did the first time, and it has a great head and some fizz. Perfect.

I should get the 3rd kit any day now and plan to do exactly the same as I did before. My only regret is that I could not select the yeast of my choice this time. I would have preferred to continue using the White Labs English Ale Yeast, but the automatic selection is now Safale US-05. However, this choice of yeast might make it even better. Fingers crossed...

This kit is easy and fun to make. Most importantly, it tastes great.

    Just...Wow!
    Review by HoppingMadon 03/02/2013
This is the first extract brew that I've done and I am absolutely stunned at the quality of this beer.

I've just tried a bottle after only 2 weeks, and I really can't stress how good it tasted and just how much like Old Speckled Hen it tastes. Slightly sweeter, with a bit more caramel, than the real OSH but then I only moved it into the cold today to start conditioning! I use the rule of 2, 2 and 2; being 2 wks in FV, 2 wks secondary fermentation and 2 wks conditioning (minimum), so for the beer to taste this good before its really even started conditioning is astounding.

Really don't know what else to say other than that; a) If you're considering moving from kits to extract then just do it. I'm honestly blown away by how good this is, especially at such an early stage - plus it's actually far more enjoyable to make than kits. And b) if you like OSH then make this kit - you won't be disappointed!

I'm really looking forward to tasting this beer in another 2 wks! :o)

    One of the best
    Review by Philipon 03/12/2012
Well, I like Old Speckled Hen. But I love this extract kit more.

I'm being serious, in fact, it's on par with various all grains I've done, I would love brewuk to make an all grain version of this, as it would be amazing.

But for the time it takes to make this, yet again I've been amazed by the quality of extract brewing, I've done Way To Amerillo a few times and always get fantastic results. As the other reviewer mentions, i was taken by suprise to find some crushed malt provided, now this is only a mini mash, that you can do in a pan, but I used my mash tun for this, because of the time your mashing, your really doing this to get some flavor and color.

Now, I'm on the 12-14 days fermention boat these days set at 20c, and this was one of the first extract i did using this method. Having left for 14 days in primary, I was happy to see just how much this beer had cleared, I bottled with 1 drop of coppers carbonation, which ALWAYS gets me the perfect, consistent fizz for all beer types, it just always seems right to me.

After bottling, I left them in the cupboard to carbonate for 2 weeks.

I've then stuck them in the garage, these beers are meant for xmas, and I've drank a few already, so really need to learn to leave it, but the flavors of this beer are amazing, and I prefer it over a bottle of speckled hen without a doubt, it's come out with a very nice caramel taste, this is what makes it so awesome, the caramel taste, also the head retention / lacing is amazing and better than any bottle of old speckled I've had.

If you like OSH, it's seriously worth it, and if your thinking about moving from Tins, just do it.

    Exceeded expectations!
    Review by Yogberton 01/11/2012
Made this kit on 6th October 2012 and tried it last night on 31st October 2012.
The kit was more complicated than the Way to Amarillo kit that I made before but it wasn't difficult. Perhaps a little more time consuming. It was, however, a bit cheaper!
It cleared quickly and so I was able to try it quickly after bottling.
My OSH is not gassy but is lightly sparkling so don't expect a huge head of froth. The taste is good and similar to the commercially brewed beer which is obviously what I hoped for!
I would certainly recommend this beer kit!
